Help me out of the doghouse

Suggestions for how to tidy this up please

I can’t put the ring any lower to cover the hole as that means we can’t get the front door key in.

The wires that connected the old doorbell press and are now powering the ring are repurposed phone cable with two wires twisted together to serve live and neutral (it’s 12v AC). They’re old and short so I’ve soldered an extension to reach the ring. Ideally I’d replace them but they disappear into the wall and reappear at the fuse box the other side of the house.

So I’m left with making this look acceptable to my wife

Get a piece of wood, hollow it up like a box, paint it white, place over it.

Whatever you do…  while you’re at it can you touch up the white on the door frame?

Lashing of white paint will fill in and hide all of that

Shouldn't that wedge be the other way around to angle the doorbell outwards for a wider view towards the path/drive?

Lots of wood filler and a bit and sanding, and paint the entire door frame

It’s hard to tell from the image, but is there any way the wires could enter the Ring from the rear (no sniggering at the back)?

In which case you could chase the wires into the doorframe and cover them with two-pack wood filler. Sand, paint, all good.

Otherwise you’ll just have to do your best with filler. Touch in the wires when you paint to take the eye away from them.

In any case I’d be minded to replace that tape on the wires, solder the connections, and heat shrink as it’s living outdoors.

Or this. Like your front door has done three world tours, just think of the memories.

Lean on it with one hand and say “ladies first” every time you go in the house with her so she doesn’t see it.

    Thanks all!

Just back from Screwfix with some trunking.

@randella I’m worried that I may need to access the wires again so I don’t want to embed in the frame. They’re very old and already embedded in the wall somewhere in the house. Plus with my skills I’d likely split the frame. P.S. the tape is heat shrink over my rather untidy soldering.

@skunkwerx divorce did cross my mind

@wobble no the “front” door is on the side of the house so it looks down the path now.

The door will get painted soon I promise!

Ah ok, apologies - misread re. soldering. Trunking’ll work just fine, and disappear from the eye once you paint it in.

You’re up on the man points I reckon, not down :)

Whatever you do get that door cam up and running quickly- there's a very suspicious-looking bloke in your mirror- taking pictures of your house.
