  • Why does it need to be wireless? Where’s he going to go?

Shure BETA 56 on a stand coming from overhead or the left is the best solution ive found - keeps the cable out of the way.
Like this - (Not me in pic).

Taylor Hawkins and Nathan Followill (Kings Of Leon) use(d) this setup.

Are you s(h)ure you wouldn't be better off with a mic less wire for the drummer?

    Lol at above

The biggest problem with drummers is keeping the drums out of the vocal mic. It's very difficult with any drummer and impossible with a hard hitting drummer. But some mics are better than others in terms of pickup pattern. If he can get right on the mic and still play fine then a hypercardioid is a good bet. If he can't then a super cardioid like an Senn E845 is a good budget bet and will get as good results as anything else .

  • Thanks for all the responses! I’ll think I’ll dissuade him from the wireless route now

No reason why he can’t use a headset wired mic, but they can be a bit fragile

Yeah, drums is the last place you need a wireless mic!

As others have suggested, a gooseneck extension on a tall microphone stand is good for positioning a mic so that it's not in the way of their arm movement.

I'd avoid headset mics - a drummer can move away from their vocal mic/swing the stand aside when not singing in to hit, but a headset gets all the heavy breathing, grunting, shouting at the bassist etc that happens between the actual moments of singing.

    This.

The drummer in my old band had a great high voice and could do harmonies. He used to dampen up his kit a lot in order to avoid the vocal mic picking up unwanted noise.

Looking at fairly random pictures of singing drummers on t'internet the mic in a stand off to the side seems popular. The only one that popped out as different was Daniel Adair of Nickelback and he uses a wireless, there are interviews with him talking about having back problems from trying to drum and use a mic on a stand. Couldn't see a price for his exact model but similar ones in the £600 ballpark. Daniel seems to sing throughout the set so the whole Madonna shebang probably makes sense.

The only one I’ve ever mic’ed up couldn’t work with a static mic. He was always turning his head away from it to look at (presumably) his drums. The headset mic worked a treat. Although having him able to address the audience at any time potentially wasn’t the best decision.
