Teenage Engineering OP1 Field, your thoughts?

What's Hot
Hi Folks,

As a long term pianist and someone who enjoyed messing around with 4 track recorders years ago as a teenager, I'm thinking of going into the OP1 bunny hole and picking up a 2nd hand OP1 Field...

Conscious there are a few here who have and use so would welcome thoughts on learning curve and your typical use case etc.

TIA

If you’re looking at it purely from the 4 track tape aspects I think it’s a lot of money to pay. That said, I’ve owned multiple OG Op-1s, and briefly a Field, primarily for the tape functions as they enabled me to make music in a way I hadn’t done before. But in the end that drew me closer to Loopers and I found things like the Soma Cosmos and Chompi Sampler more of an interesting prospect. I don’t own either of those yet, but I currently use a TC Electronic Dittox4 Looper with a Vongnon Polyphrase Delay and Ultrasheer Reverb and I get lost in those for hours.

But I’d happily get another Op-1 Field if the money plopped into my lap. It’s the only instrument I’ve ever dreamt about and one of the few I always regret selling.

    Cheers both,  really useful insights.

A big draw for me is the form factor. I know there are a lot of other kit options that will be better than the OP1F in various regards,  whether that be sequencer (*Deluge?), Drums (*Syntakt) and midi/DAW vs 4 track emulation  but none of those seem to have the ability to just grab and go and take anywhere in quote the same way.. e.g. noodling via headphones on the train for example.  I imagine this might end up being a gateway to more and bigger stuff that's more desktop based, or more fully into synthesiser engines etc but this seems a good place to start given I can take it pretty much anywhere...

    Cheers!

Have one, and I love it!

I was a bit unsure, as I have a 4 track, drum machine, and synths.  However, this is all of those in a small portable package so it was worth getting for me.

When I'm in work and I have an idea it's there, or when I'm 20 mins early for the school run I sit with it.  It actually reduces my social media time a lot!  Previously I would doom scroll on lunch, or in the car waiting.  Now I make music.

The sounds a great, and the sampling is so much fun
