100 inch TV - is it a good idea?

What's Hot
In my TV-watching room, we like to have sofas and TVs near the opposing walls, and the walls are far enough apart that my 65 inch TV does not fill my field of view (in my spectacles) unless I use another chair in front of the sofa, with my face about 2m from the TV.

I've noticed that some well-reviewed 4k 100 inch TVs are now lower than £2k, and wondered about getting one, If I then used the sofa instead, it would be about 3m to 3.5m from my face

How to calculate the right viewing distance for your TV | What Hi-Fi?
Ideal viewing distances for 4K TV
TV size (inches)Distance
421.28m (4.2ft)
431.32m (4.3ft)
461.4m (4.6ft)
501.52m (5ft)
551.68m (5.5ft)
651.98m (6.5ft)
752.29m (7.5ft)
852.59m (8.5ft)

says best distance for 4k cinema viewing (40 degrees) is  1 to 1.5 times the size, so
65 = 1.65m, so  1.65m to 2.48m
100 inch would be 2.54m to 3.8m

Pros: more sensible furniture, could get occasional even wide field of vision if wanted, it would hide the ugly fireplace
Cons: cost, and a downgrade from LG OLED to HiSense mini-LED

Has anyone tried these big TVs?
Doing the distance maths above, I'm suspecting I should just wait until OLEDs or similar come down in price, since 2m is a good distance now (except for letterbox aspect films)

  • 100” TV! Wow. I’ve got a 65” and my wife hates it. She was happy with a smaller tv. For my room size, 65” is great. I don’t think I could cope with 100”. Probably best to just set up an actual screen and get a projector at that stage. I also don’t know how the quality would stack up at that size. I always suggest waiting with tech. Not my money tho!

    100”!

I have a 55” and 100” is almost 4x the size. That is going to dominate any room.

If my other half agrees…I’d definitely do it though.  Porn will look terrifying lol

Yes it is.  With a caveat, the ''entry level'' models may seem to be good, even impressive when you watch/see a 100'' for the first time, read the specs and look into the models you're looking at very carefully, especially if you're wanting the best picture quality you can get for gaming - though these ones cost upwards of £10K.  There's a very noticeable difference in quality when you compare the picture quality on ones that are around the £2k mark - £1500 to £2500, to the ones that cost more, and being 100'' that difference is more noticeable.  Even during Black Friday/Christmas/Boxing Day/January sales, I'd budget £3-£4K, if not £5K.

And I also strongly advise against the Sony Bravia - yes it's only 98'' I know, and having just recently bought and installed a Samsung QE98QN90D - again I know it's 98'' and not 100'' it's not easy to actually find a 100'', and yes I know both of these TVs are more than £2K, I would strongly recommend the Samsung QE98QN90D, it's so good that after setting one up in the new place,I ordered another one yesterday to replace the Sony Bravia my living room.

And they are both heavy, and have bad energy efficiency ratings - I think the Sony is an F or G while the Samsung is an E.

Not a TV, but I have an Epson 100" 4k Laser projector with the matching ALR screen and it's made watching sports and films pretty amazing. In fact anything. If you've come from OLED I can imagine the blacks might not be to taste, but other than that I'm loving it. It's an ultra short throw model.

Get a projector? My dad’s got one and they set it to fill the wall.

  • 100” tvs seem to becoming popular now..

im in the projector camp tho, especially the short throw ones.

trouble with TV is if you have any sort of imperfections, light bleed etc… a 100” will be a nightmare, plus reflections.

That’s what in be looking at.

You can seriously improve the quality of the ''blacks'' with your room lighting.  When I was furnishing this house I almost went the projector route, but found out quite fast that no matter how much you spend on one, to get the best quality out of it, you've basically got to design the room around it and dedicate the room to it.

Personally I wouldn't but that's probably because the content that I watch is mainly standard 1080 HD, something like 70% HD v 30% 4K. I find 1080 bad enough on a 55 inch screen let alone 100 inch.

Anything that makes me move my head to look at different things on the screen is too big.

I’ve got a 46 and I’m about 3.5m away and it’s fine. A little bigger for sport would be fine too, but 100…?

Is there even enough good 4K content to make it work for normal viewing?

I have my projector set to 100” and when we have it on with Apple TV4k box attached Disney + is amazing. I recently got the 4k Dolby Vision and Atmos versions of the Matrix films and again, very impressive for film night. Sport is also good to watch @100

When we redo the room I will be basing it around a 100” ultra short throw set up

Couldn’t say about 100”. I have a 77” 4k Samsung and I am really happy with it. I am watching some streamed rugby on it right now and wondering whether another almost 2 feet would be worth it.

I would really recommend getting the best picture quality you can, prob 4k as a minimum. Also think about where it’s going to be located, and what it is sitting on. A friend has a 80” and it’s standing on a unit that is too high. The top o the screen is almost up to the ceiling and it looks wrong. Especially when it’s off.

The Apple TV 4K box is amazing. So easy to use / very responsive and an elegant little remote....and I don't even watch Apple TV content. It's miles ahead of the Google TV option.

I have my viewing space set to be able to almost completely take out light when I want to, plus a decent 5.1 system to go with it. Gaming on it with 60FPS @4k with my PC is just epic :-)

And I'll second @exocet about the Apple TV 4K, except with the caveat that the iPlayer app doesn't support 4k.

AFAIK projectors are more of a compromise for contrast, etc.

The blacks are good on OLED, but it's the bright spots that are amazing - literally dazzling when there is a bright spot in a scene like a candle, lamp or the sun
