The first president I remember being elected, with great hopes after the resignation of Nixon and the short term of Ford.

He was perhaps not a great president, although most of his failures were caused by problems outwith his control, and he had some real achievements too - but I think he was a good and decent man, and his humanitarian work since leaving office reinforces that.

    RIP

I think of him as being rare in that he was much more influential after his presidency than during - more so than any other president I can think of. Seemed decent. RIP.

My wife (who is American, and on the democrat end of the scale) regards him as a great president.

Apparently he was the first president for man years, and none since who was able to balance the books.

A good man.  He checked out before he had to endure a second term of Agent Orange, and who can blame him.

    RIP Jimmy.

  • RIP Jimmy Carter was the first American president I was aware of as a child. He visited Newcastle on a trip to the UK in the 70’s and my parents took me to the civic centre to see him. He always seemed like a good man.

My biggest memory of Jimmy Carter was watching an episode of This Old House about 30 years ago with him on. He was helping build houses for the charity Habitat For Humanity. He struck me as nothing like normal presidents. He was part of the greatest generation and it is sad to see them slipping away.  He seemed to actually want to help people, like he really genuinely cared about improving people’s lives.

he always struck me as someone with his heart in the right place, and he had ideas before their time, but he was not able to compete with the human desire to just have fun. That's why he lost to a 2 bit holywood D lister.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

  • I hadn’t seen the news. 100, wow.
Yes probably the first president I remember anything about.

I was thinking that too - at least it will be Biden leading the tributes and not the self-centred moron who didn't (alone of all the living former presidents) wish Carter a happy 100th birthday back in October.

A bit too young to remember much about him, other than the helicopter disaster, unfortunately. Well, I was 14-18 years old but not interested in current affairs home or abroad, other than what my parents talked about.

Definitely did well afterwards, and quite something to make 100.

Awww noooo , he has done lots & lots to eradicate something called the Guinea worm ,which is a thoroughly unpleasant thing in Africa . It spread its misery wide  via water supplies & the symptoms it caused . Jimmy used his fame as a president to persuade African leaders to help him with it in exchange fore having their photo took with an American president .

last time I heard there were only 4 cases of it  instead of loads

My parents unexpectedly met him in a small pub in Cellan near Lampeter in the mid nineties. They had stopped by for a bar meal and he showed up unannounced with a couple of security and family members. Took time to speak the small number of people in the pub. Think he was on some kind ancestral visit retracing his family roots.
