Wayne Osmond

So, Wayne has died at 73. The Osmonds were massive for a while, and although I didn't appreciate them at the time they seemed like a nice wholesome bunch of guys. It's a strange thought now that they were teen heart throbs as they all looked pretty old at the time. Bands that appeal to teens have got a LOT younger over the years! This is latter day Wayne:

Nice write up on him from the ever reliable BBC:

And this was surely their finest moment:

Although for some reason I do love their Stevie Wonder medley with Cher!

I said that Crazy horses was their greatest moment, but of course I was forgetting One bad apple. Written with the Jackson 5 in mind, their record company rejected it. Must have been kicking themselves as it was no 1 in America for 5 weeks!

I guess they mostly just looked old - he'd have only been in his early 20s then, and 99% of the attention was on Donny who was just a teenager (and still only 67).

I quite liked them.  I remember the cartoon series where they used to travel to different parts of the world.  In one of them the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen fell in love with Donny.  Which is a bit weird.

The band had a long career from singing with Andy Williams to being quite rawk to pop hits and always some kind of following. Some serious musical talent in the band, I think Wayne and Alan in particular. It’s the album The Plan that many fans talk about, their 70s rock concept album. This is a track from it that would almost pass as a Grand Funk track:

The BBC obit seems to mark Wayne out as a lovely sounding man.
My sister was a bit of a Donny fan (went to see him on tour not that long ago) and Crazy Horses was a huge favourite of mine at the time so The Osmonds were a part of my childhood. To what extent my Mormon mother approved or disapproved of Wayne, Donny and the others I don’t know. That’s a conversation I should have had with her but can’t now.
    RIP Wayne.
