EDIT -  maybe putting myself back out there again after giving up before

Hi all, my new year's resolution is to get more singing gigs after I enjoyed the ones I did last year.

I'm based in Birmingham. I'm open to ideas as to what it might entail but thought I'd ask on here in case anybody is looking for a singer for their band or has some ideas. I'm a tenor range, fairly open to various genres and formats though wouldn't necessarily suit anything too shouty or screamy as my voice is fairly smooth and polite.

I'm not half as annoying as I may appear on here I play piano at weddings so I'm used to performing in front of others, I can double up playing keys or guitar etc but for the purposes of my resolution I'd rather that be a side element of it rather than the main element.

My pages where you can hear what I sound like (other than the Cover & Composition challenges on here!) as as follows:

Thanks

Singer wanted or singer available? I believe that a certain John Osbourne is about to retire (again). Give Tony Iommi a call.

  • I would put an advert on Join My Band. As a singer, I would expect you’ll generate interest, but you’ll probably have to filter out some time wasters or dreamers. Be as specific as you can be in the advert. Finding singers for bands isn’t easy.

I have done some learning towards a rendition of Paranoid in the style of Ryan Adams from his Birmingham show last year, but i don't think that would get me the gig somehow (and i support the wrong football team).

Yeah I could do, though i know it's full of nutters and whilst i know this places is too, I'm at least familiar with the types of nutter here :)

The last time I posted on there I had interest from a Rolling Stones tribute and somebody who wanted to write songs in the style of late 70s Fleetwood Mac and wanted me to sing them.

For shits and giggles, I once advertised myself on JMB as a Chapman Stickist. I received one reply from two strange dudes who obviously had no idea what a Chapman Stick is let alone the genres of music in which it is most commonly used.

I'll be honest, i don't know what that is either but then I probably wouldn't reply! I've posted on there a few times in the last week and had no replies so I've deleted that now and will focus instead on what i already have

I'm very impressed with your version of Needle Of Death. To be honest I can't see why you'd want to be in a band when you clearly have the talent to be a solo performer.

That's very kind of you @Plectrum thank you - glad you liked my Bert Jansch impression.

I think the main reason though is that I think it might be more fun with others, and I don't count "self editing" as a skill I possess unfortunately (you'll know what i mean if you've listened to my SoundCloud!). I also think I'm a bit lacking in what the kids call "main character energy", so I think of all the "men with an acoustic guitar" singers there are out there, I'd probably be considered quite a dull choice by myself. There aren't many venues (that I know of) who book mellow kind of folky ish singers - my solo style wouldn't really sell much beer or create an exciting atmosphere! However I think with influence from others and in a group I'd probably have more chance of being interesting enough

You only have to read some of the posts on this forum to understand that being in a band has just as much chance of being a nightmare as of being fun. Yes I've listened to your Soundcloud and I don't recognise the "you" you're describing. You're clearly capable of singing a wide genre of styles. It's just a matter of adapting the set list to the venue. I've seen punters up and dancing to rock and roll songs sung by a singer with just an acoustic guitar.

Thank you again, you are being very kind to me. I'll count on at least one ticket sold if I ever get to play in Staffordshire (albeit I was playing in Weston near Stafford on Friday actually, though I didn't do any singing as the atmosphere didn't really call for it there, just did piano).

I think I need others energy to bounce off though in order to play the kind of upbeat music I think you are referring to - I don't feel I have the gravitas to carry that off on my own. If I were to do stuff solo (which i have done, albeit not much paid) I'm more the mellow sat-on-a-stool type thing which can be quite dull and I can't think of one place I could do that other than open mics!

You do get around a bit ;)

I can see where you're coming from. Like many, I started off using an acoustic for open mikes. It does tend to steer you towards the ballad side of things. Plus that's what everyone else was doing and I've never been one to follow the crowd so I switched to electric. Maybe something to experiment with?

Now that winter is here and in trying to distract myself from getting bored, I'm very tentatively trying to put myself back out there again, if anybody locally has any need of a singer who can do piano or guitar as well. This my latest recording effort

    Open to ideas! thanks

EDIT AGAIN actually no i can't do this, sorry
