“I’d be on a line and they’d pass stuff down to me and I’d weld it, and then it’d go on to somewhere else,” Iommi sets up the scene. “One day, the person that would be sending me the thing to weld never turned up, so they put me on this giant, huge press — a guillotine-type press. I don’t know what happened, I must have pushed my hand in. Bang! It came down. It just took the ends off [my fingers]. I actually pulled them off. As I pulled my hand back, it sort of pulled them off. It was left with two stalks, the bone was sticking out the top of the finger.”

Iommi continues, “I went to the hospital and they cut the bones off and then they said, ‘You might as well forget playing.’ God, I was just so upset. I wouldn’t accept that there wasn’t some way around it, that I couldn’t be able to play.”

I was sure that Iommi had previously said the accident happened on what had already been planned to be his final day working at the factory in question, and, sure as eggs is eggs, I watched another interview this week where he repeated the fact.

Edit: can’t find the clip right now. You’ll have to take my word for it.

I guess even his own versions of the story have varied over time.  Just as there are slightly different versions of how they chose the name "Black Sabbath" although it was certainly inspired by the Mario Bava film.  That's how memory works...

I made it into the seating plan, bang on the hour. But I was in a conference call, and soon as I got on the page, I was asked by senior to present my screen. Absolutely gutted. Will probably watch the livestream!

They charge about £20 for heavyweight boxing matches, don't they?  It doesn't seem particularly excessive to me.

For some reason I thought this gig was on the 14th June cos it was the day after I'd been to see SatchVai and the day before Fathers Day.
I planned my present to be watching the livestream, then on the Sunday I tried to find it but couldn't see any mention of it happening anywhere online and said to my wife it must have been dreadful, no one's even written an article about it. Sent messages round asking my friends if they'd watched any of it. Then I noticed the date on the poster and felt a bit silly.
