Stereo Delay recommendations

What's Hot

I was playing with an Analogman ARDX20 and Carbon Copy Deluxe in Stereo earlier this week (one left, one right) and found it completely intoxicating.  On my big board I've got a Boss SDE-3000D in stereo and that ping-pongs nicely.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other decent ping-pong stereo delays?   Key features:

- Smaller size preferred (obviously I could just buy a Timeline and be done with it)
- Must have separate Left/Right Jacks
- must do ping-pong delay (so no Keeley Halo)
- analogue would be nice, but not essential (Boss DM-101 looks inviting but is massive)
- MIDI would be a nice-to-have, but having access to 2 presets would be sufficient (manual and 1 preset would be fine)

Loved the polymoon but think you’d need a Y splitter cable to get L/R out of it from memory

I’ve had some fun with the boss terra echo but not for ping-pong stuff, more spatial ethereal stuff. Actually, can’t bear the ping-pong thing

@Gulliver what do you mean by ping pong and why does it rule out the Halo? The Halo will play back the repeats in stereo.

The repeats don’t bounce between left and right, they’re coming from both sides all the time. Or at least it doesn’t in Halo mode

Yep, the DIG has different delay ratios (with some overlap with the Halo), can also set the delay times independently, and the delay lines can either be set in series, parallel, or ping pong but I believe the Halo is in series only but not 100% on this.

The dig is pretty much the same as the SDE-3000 though, which the op already has.

but the DiG is smaller than the Boss

TC flashback? - don't think it does presets though
Flash back 2 has 3 toneprint slots so 3 presets on top of the various modes. Needs a tap temp switch to get the best out of it.

The Eventide Micropitch can do different times OR tap divisions left and right, along side all the other detuning stuff it does.  Five presets, but more available via MIDI, if that's your thing.  Same footprint as the DIG, too.

  • The DIG has the best stereo field I’ve heard on a delay pedal, specifically because of its ping pong mode and the variations of subdivisions. May sound like hype, perhaps, but that’s my observation after trying many delay pedals.

My preference, sound-wise, is the v1, but if you need all the midi control, the v2 is a no brainer.

A quick way to decide if it’s for you would be to try the plugin, but as I say, that’s based on v2, the v1 seems to maintain separation in the taps for longer than the v2, as a result the v2 narrows the stereo image sooner in the trail than the original. It’s a subtle thing but after using it for so long, when I switched to the new one, I noticed it pretty quickly.

Did you ever try a Mr Black Tapex 2 @Jonathanthomas83 ? That seems to tick the boxes too and may be an option if OP wants a simple interface.

Andertons' demo shows it ping ponging. Pedal in use at the start and from 4.20 ish

    Just a thought

Great shout, mate, I recently read about Jack Deville's approach to stereo, and he takes a very purist view and I fully expect that's resulted in some amazing stereo pedals, though I've not tried any of them...I'm very keen to get the Supermoon Eclipse and yep, you guessed it, the Tapex 2 was on my Wishlist already! haha.

Edit: here's the blog post if anyone's interested.

I bloody love Mr Black pedals!

DD-7 does ping pong, I'd imagine the DD-8 does too.

The stereo field on the Dig is stunning.

Other small footprint options are the MXR Joshua and the Boss SDE3, both of which have really nice stereo options.

Question to all those suggesting the DIG - does it have that super clean and sparkly 'Strymon Sound'?
