Garaj Mahal. They pull in influences from all over the place… hints of Weather Report, Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Shakti, Tribal Tech, all sorts. Their guitarist Fareed Haque has worked with lots of the greats including Joe Zawinul, but I discovered them via Kai Eckhardt being their bass player, as he’s worked with my favourite fusion guitarist John McLaughlin in the past.

A bit a a plug for a keyboard player that I met 7 years ago when he answered my call for a dep to play a one off gig with my (covers) band.

His name is Oli Howe, from Brighton. I knew that he was good 7 years back....but had no idea just how talented he is.

Peak John Scofield from his 1986 album Still Warm.
The track is: High And Mighty.
A beautiful, theme and chewy solo that's obtainable for us mere mortals.
    This is just masterful.

How is there no Mahavishnu Orchestra posted in this thread?

While we’re on the subject of Mahavishnu (great band, been a big fan for years), John McLaughlin worked with Paco de Lucia for a time. JM’s influences obviously rubbed off on Paco and vice versa, you can hear it most clearly on Paco’s track “Zyryab” that has shades of the Mahavishnu’s “Meetings of the Spirit” about it. It’s a lovely piece of music, very fluid and sinuous. Really good live version here.

I am no expert - so this might not be fusion..... maybe straight jazz, free jazz, jazz rock..... I have no idea. But it's the closest thing I have in my record collection..... the album this is from, Its over, I survived, Is brilliant.....

Have a bit of Ayers Rock, an Aussie jazz rock band that were around in the 70s. Here’s their wonderful version of Joe Zawinul’s Boogie Woogie Waltz, with THE best use of a mutron fx pedal you’re ever likely to hear.
