Perforated eardrum!

What's Hot
So I went to the audiologist a month ago to get moulds for some pro 17s. Rung up recently to find the old duffer had lost some form so nothing has happened for a month and he never bothered to tell me!

Arranged an appointment with a new audiologist and it went much better. In fact it was so much better, procedures were followed, I got a receipt this time, etc! One thing he noted which the other guy didn't were some pin-prick sized scars on my right ear-drum.. Healed over perforations! Christ, that got me worried. A few years back I could have sworn I had ringing in my ears!

From now on I'll be taking extra special care and attention.

how does that happen, from high volume? the volume/resonating/shock wave is too high and it makes little holes in the drum?
does sound concerning, yes, and thanks for giving me something else to be worried about

I always thought the eardrum was non regenerative tissue.

Well, maybe I misunderstood him.. I'll investigate. But for certain, damage has been done at some point.

Just wondering now if in-ear headphones are a good thing. I do listen to a lot of music.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss - for those who like saying 'What?'.

Once your hearing goes, it doesn't come back.  Manicguitarist posted about it back in the MR days.  You tend to lose sensitivity in the 2KHz-4KHz range, which is the most important range for speech.  Soft consonants - the ones at the ends of words that have the least energy in them - become harder to distinguish.  You'll struggle to tell words like 'part' and 'park' apart (bad news if you're a mechanic or a groundskeeper), and if it gets really bad, the consonants at the start of words (which are the parts with the next least energy) become harder to make out, and you'll either find your lip-reading skills improving or your friends will learn that there's not much point telling you jokes any more.
You don't need much knowledge of anatomy to appreciate the fundamental ubiquity of opinions.

  • Sometimes I also listen to music loudly (not ridiculously) in the car.

I asked him about my ear popping and he said they look OK in the respect, so eared not needed.

  • I won't get the plugs for 3 weeks so in the meantime will use my laserlite earplugs even to the slash gig

To be honest I still sometimes hear a slight high frequency ringing but always thought that was normal? It's not often...
Mega care being taken from now on. I'm half thinking about getting ER20s until I get my Pro17s..

Wrong. It'll heal itself in time.

  • By the way, he recommended never holding your nose and blowing in order to pop ears etc..!

    Fair enough, stand corrected.

It's usually an ear infection or cotton buds, or the end of a biro that do it, rather than noise damage.  Unless you worked on aircraft carriers.

the internal little hairs that get damaged dont regenerate though, that damage/wear is permanent

That is just fecking typical.  So you lose all the ones on your head that keep you warm and looking suave and all the ones that help you hear better and yet sprout new ones from everywhere else you never needed them and ultimately end up looking like some bald, deaf mutant gorilla with mange from the land that time forgot?

What an almighty genealogical cock up.

Our kid once slammed me into the mats at training, fell ear first on the side of my head - mashed the ear drum up. Well weird feeling.

Definitely. I had a burst ear drum around 12 years ago. It bleed, then weeped for while and once that stopped it started to heal pretty quick. My hearing was actually slightly better after which the specialist explain is due to the new skin being tighter. As a result it was a bit oversensitive for a while, so take care, but then settled. I suppose no much different to a drum skin really.
