I can’t find the interview now (was on YouTube) but basically he was speaking about the McCarty 594 line of guitars & how Hendrix was basically playing with new gear on his 1st album & not old/vintage equipment at the time.
Edit: Found the interview!
The McCarty 594 | PRS Guitars
Not just new as in "just came out of the factory", but also new as in "not been done before" in most cases.
The Fender Stratocaster was only a little over a decade old in 1966. The Marshall 1959 had only been around for a year when Hendrix started using them. The Fuzz Face and the wah-wah pedal were brand new products, as was the Univibe, and Roger Mayer was developing stuff specifically for Hendrix.
It's hard to draw an analogy - "it would be like a guitarist today using ____" because whereas in Hendrix's day the idea was to make guitar sounds that had never been heard before, so much equipment these days is designed to sound like things that already exist. Effects and amp modelling, reissues, "boutique" clones, old sounds reimagined in smaller, or quieter, or cheaper, or more reliable or convenient boxes.
I don't think I'm saying that one or other is better, just that Hendrix came along when the electric guitar was going through a pretty rapid evolution that allowed him to take advantage of- and probably also to push forward- various technological advancements that were arriving just as he was hitting the scene.
I don't think that takes anything away from his creativity either- it's one thing having a load of interesting new toys to play with and quite another to make music with them that doesn't sound like someone playing with a load of interesting new toys. I'm sure we can all relate.
Don't talk politics and don't throw stones. Your royal highnesses.
