@Jaded I was able to mimic the SMM with an Eventide Timefactor delay, but need to A/B them again. An interesting experiment....!
Oh that is interesting! I thought about getting the Ultratap which I guess is more or less the multitap setting from the Timefactor, they both seem to have the "slurm" control which from what I can gather just sort of blurs the repeats together so you don't get that sort of "clicking" sound of each repeat triggering? I think you can also change some of the timing of the taps to get even closer to the SPX90s!

Definitely interested in how you get along with it and would love to hear it in action somehow!

I will see about getting a video up here of the Timefactor sometime soon.

The Zoom recreation of the Digitech is decent. The Line 6 Nonlinear Reverb takes a bit of meddling with but sounds superb. Both have preset capabilities. Any HX unit obv does way way more, but the zoom pedals have some good sounds in them too.

That would be really great if you could, there’s nowhere near demos like that around!

@Jaded This is what I got on the Eventide forum. Someone posted their approximation. I tried this and with some fuzz etc, it sounded pretty good, though I put the wet mix at around 80%. One thing that confuses me is that if feedback B is at 0, surely the delay mix should be set to A only.

Is the feedback at 0 no repeats or just the one? I guess they may have done that to add some sort of bounce to simulate the uneven taps of the SPX90? I’m really not too sure!

  • I am using the EHX Cathedral for now, for the reverse reverb. It's ok. It's different to the Digitech Digiverb, which had some volume loss on the reverse setting. The gate seemed to be a better option on the Digiverb.

Another recommendation for the Helix Nonlinear reverb.

I have spent so long chasing the MBV reverse gate sound. I've had countless SPX-90s, done it with the SMMH, had the Ultratap, and even had one of the JMA early reflections reverse reverb pedals. The JMA is incredible. It really is Reverse Gate. I sold it because I wasn't using it enough to justify it on the board and the Nonlinear reverb is very very good. It did more than enough for me.

oooo, that is interesting. I have two boards at the moment. One with drives, fuzz, tremolo, wah, chorus, phaser, and the other has an eventide timefactor, ehx cathedral and a walrus audio slotva. If one of the boards were smaller, happy days!
Maybe a HX One might be the solution here.
Or sell a bunch and get a HX Effects!

If I have time over the weekend, I'll get my JM restrung and record a bit of Nonlinear for you if you like.

  • @Heartfeltdawn that would be cool! Out of curiosity how are the other reverbs on it? It’s the reverse or gated effect I am really after. I will give the Cathedral another few weeks and see how I get on with it.

I find the reverbs are pretty good. There's a good variety, the newer ones sound good and the older legacy reverbs still do a good job. Right now I'm playing a lot of clean stuff using delay instead of reverb. The Crisscross delay is my favouite. I think you'll dig the Bloom reverb a lot.

  • Is the Boss RV200 *that* underwhelming for gate or reverse. It doesn't seem to get the love at all.

Yes. It's very disappointing. It didn't last long with me.

First, sorry for my lack of sound. Today has been a bit of a cocked-up day with two runs, one thunderstorm, a later storm, and some family fun. At the end of the day it now feels like a autumn cold is coming on as my throat is feeling decidedly rough.

When it comes to gated reverb, the SPX90 is the best. After that, its the JMA pedal. Third I'd place the Megatap delay on the Fractal Axe FX. Then it's Nonlinear on the Helix followed by the SMMH. The ones I don't like tend to be too smooth. The original SPX90 Reverse Gate sound is sort of clattery. The delay taps aren't hyper diffused and washed out.

The whole thing with MBV and the glide guitar ifor something like To Here Knows When is that you're playing open strings along with fretted notes whilst moving the trem arm. That trem action means some of the strings are pitch shifted, others aren't. The effect is sort of pitch shifted chorus Add a bit of distortion in and then feed it into the reverse reverb = you've got it down. I did find that I didn't always set the reverse reverb for 100%. By having a little bit of non-reversed sound, you're adding a little more solidity to the sound but not losing the glide guitar sound.

I'll try and get my shit together tomorrow and get something down for you :)

  • @Heartfeltdawn no problem! I did come across a video of the Line 6 non linear on YT (racoon studios) and it seems like it could work.
My other option is to sell the Walrus Audio Slo and EHX Cathedral and get a used Eventide Space though I like the option of dual reverbs if needs be and the Space doesnt do that.

  • A gated reverb would probably get close too. Something like the Catalinbread CBX

mate of mine uses  the cheap-p 00s Marshall Reflector that has something about it. Reverse 'Verb on that sounds decent to me !

Yeah, I have heard of it. It is going to be an a effect soaked with other effects in any case. I would just like some sustain on the effect and no volume drop!

Another vote for the Zoom Multistomp reverse reverb - I've never found anything that matches it, but I think that's because it was the sound *I* wanted rather than trying to do the MBV thing? Also loved the Bit Crusher on it and have yet to find one that can better it.
