I’ve fancied doing this for a while. I started by cleaning the muck off with some car interior snow foam and left it to dry for a week.
A bit of masking and 4 coats of shellac for today. The colour I’ve ended up with feels just right. Tomorrow I’ll flat with a bit of P400 and start sander sealing. Im anticipating around 4 coats but will see how it goes. I’m not looking for a mega-flat finish, and I want to retain a bit of texture/weave.

I’ve painted so many guitars but never a case. I’ll be honest, I was a bit bored today and needed to do something other than trying to master Under the bridge. Again.

    Wow! Theres something I never ever expected to see! Looks pretty good, will you have to do the bits where the tweed goes inside the case edges?

    Good question @paulnb57 ;

    I think so. They’ll just get brushed most likely, to get the colour right. I’ll know better once I’ve demasked it and opened it up.

    I would definitely not sand it to flat the finish - that will cut through the top fibres and make it fray.

    Unless a heavy relic look is the goal…

    Yeah I’ve only de-nibbed it with some P600 this morning. But I know exactly what you mean.

    The sanding sealer is going on throughout today and I’m going for a satin sheen. Might be a few days but I’ll post some pics of the finished article when I’m done.

    Wow, I got a bit sweaty finishing this off today.

    I decided to go a bit darker so this is 2 more coats of shellac, a couple of passes of sanding sealer, finished off with a polyurethane 2 pack matt varnish.

    I don't want to rub it in but that's only one of seven booths I have at this facility (I also run another two facilities of similar size). It's a small booth too, the larger ones can fit articulated trucks in them. I have the freedom of using them whenever I like, even on weekends. It's a proper workshop and I'll miss it when I eventually leave/retire.
