The Last Dinner Party - This is the Killer Speaking

What's Hot
MolochMoloch Frets: 1169
Well, seeing as @darthed1981 is on vacation, I'll have to pick up the simp mantle and post this one:

It's been a live staple for a long time now, so it's great to hear the official recording at last. Fantastic video too.

Well I'm back, to quote Sam Gamgee...

Great new song... the bit with the sugarcube at the end has officially pushed my blood pressure into statins territory BTW.

Totally stoked about the new album - especially as we are also getting presumably next-single "Second Best"...
I must be a narcissist, God knows that I can't resist, to make a song and dance about it?

    Funny story....

Couple of months back, made a huge effort to get a copy of Rolling Stone UK... Wolf Alice on the cover, nice magazine, great feature... took me ages to find...

    Phew, done, sorted...

Next issue, who is on the cover but Abi and co??!!

    OK...

Last Dinner Party pulled out of Victorious Festival yesterday as part of a group of bands protesting after an Irish folk act were cut off for bringing a Palestinian flag on stage.

Without making this "political" and getting a silly thread about a band closed as a result...

However much I loved them before... add.... 25%.

Instigated by The Mary Wallopers having their sound cut because they dared to have a Palestinian flag on stage from the start of their set. I’ve seen The Mary Ws twice - they certainly had the flag on stage in the Tramshed two years ago. I can’t find the pics on my phone of the small gig the year before but wouldn’t be surprised if they displayed the flag then. They say they’ve had it on stage for six years.

I don’t know anything about Victorious festival but am not sure what they expect when they sign a band who are blatantly political, pro- republican, anti-materialist and quite anti-English. They’ve never hidden their politics, either recorded or on stage.

Btw, ‘Irishman folk act’. Yeah, they are but like The Pogues were an Irish folk act.

I certainly didn't mean to disparage the Mary Wallopers to be 100% clear - they seemed a proper authentic band with principles.

Now if they were booked as a mid-afternoon happy slappy Irish band going "Ah begorrah wheres me pot of gold" by an idiot, only to get a stridently political act who then did something political - I think it goes down among the other great "if you didn't want me doing that, then why did you book me?" bookings of the year.

Notably Bob Vylan - see here one of the best retorts to casual everyday racism I've ever heard...

My understanding of the Victorious Festival is that they have a rule of no flags.  Perhaps @Danny1969 might know this for certain as he played there and may have seen the booking conditions.  If there is such a condition and a band chose to display some and instigate a chant in support of the flags, then I can understand why the organisers decided to stop them from playing any further.  Their fault for booking the band and the band's fault for contravening rules if there was such a condition of booking.

From what I can see, on the Mary W’s own video of the event, they didn’t instigate any chant, because they’d already had the sound cut.

Actually, I’ve just watched it again and Charles Henry does chant Free Palestine before the sound is cut.

Yes Victorious have a no flag policy according to management, they basically want to avoid anything that might spark trouble. Personally I agree with that. It's a huge family  festival with a lot of kids and they need to be kept safe. Once people start fighting in crowds that size anyone can be badly hurt.

Another band pulled out of the stage I  was working on. Can't remember who.

I can certainly get the festival's point of view.  Does anyone know what's in the contract over these things?

It gets to a point where global situations get bad enough any kind of (peaceful) protest becomes understandable and almost expected.  I suspect this is, however, very hard to deal with on a live stage with senior management not available.

And tour announced. I'm already going to one of the smaller shows in October, but I'll be looking to head to one of the London ones in December too.

  • "The Scythe" is another fantastic song - great solo from Emily, and brilliantly anthemic considering that the structure is a little unusual.

Not many bands on major labels these days making little five minute symphonies of that kind of ambition.

Lucky bugger - I wanted to go see them in Cambridge last year but Mrs Ed won't go with me (she hates TLDP, apparently because they are annoying and I like them too much, or something like that...  :p )
