What song has this chord progression? (Now with audio)

I have googled far and wide but I have no answer.

So I was playing a chord progression on the piano (my apologies) this morning and playing a melody over the top. I DEFINITELY KNOW this melody but can't place it.

The chord progression was D, D/C#, C, G. It is very mid tempo. Almost waltzy. The melody is from the D scale - starts on the 3rd, up to 4th 5th then running back down. E note on the C chord and B on the G. 

It sounds like an Elton John or Lionel Richie type melody. Driving me nuts trying to remember the song.

Out of curiosity I asked ChatGPT and Perplexity and neither know! Often they’re quite good at that sort of thing.

I think you’re right. But I don’t think I’ve ever listened to that EJ song. But I must have! Cheers!

Nudging the progression up a tone from C to D gives: | D | A/C# | C | C/G G |
Starts out with a 'line cliche' in the bass.

It Ain't Over: I Imaj7 I9 IV6 IV
Nudging the progression up a semitone from C# to D gives: | D | Dmaj7 | D9 | G6 G |
Full 'line cliche' in the middle voice...aside from the groove, the borrowed D9 and G6 make it more funky/soulful/gospel.

Certainly some similarities there.

Edit: It's actually fairly different, but the descending bassline has some similarities.
