Bright caps

  • I have also modded the resonance NFB on my JMP.. just adds that bit of depth and body that it can lack at low to mid volume.  Addresses the bright cap issue from the other end of the studio spectrum. :)
Interesting... tell me more.  Or is it simpler to crank it a bit and use a attenuator?

Is there a difference between bright and thin, though?
Very different - to me, bright is having more treble and thin is lacking bass, which is not the same thing. A bright cap increases treble, but doesn’t reduce bass.

The problem is when the bright cap is too large, like on Marshall 1987/1959s - it lets a lot of the mid through as well as the treble, so it does sound more like ‘less bass.
Thanks, yes, that does seem like a good distinction. I think that's what we found with the Crate VC30 (and even more so with my Crate VC50 which I'd done this to a while back with pleasing results). The Blues Junior wasn't suffering in quite the same way, but I'm happier without the cap, and feel like I have more usable tone controls.

What I'm getting from this is that bright caps aren't bad per se, but it depends how you're using the amp and how carefully they've been integrated.

I like them on gain pots and have added them to all kinds of amps from Jet City amps to my Peavey Bandit.

I usually like the sound with the gain on 10 but want that little extra sizzle you get from a flat out pot but at much lower gain levels.

I’ve tried this a number of times and still can’t get there. You can put another one the pot AH! Oh the treble!

Ah, and this is very different to how I'm using the Blues Junior and the clean channel on the Crate which had one. When the relevant pot is near the bottom the bright cap has more effect. In the case of the Crate, it was on a master volume and the amp is bloody loud, and in the case of the Blues Junior I use it more as a clean pedal platform and keep the gain low.

Even with that, still took me a few minutes.
