A slightly daft guitar ID thread

What's Hot
Being an 80s kid in Scotland, I always used to see this chap on the TV, even though I don't speak any gaelic. BBC Alba have been putting bits of the show online lately, and I noticed Donnie's taste in guitars was actually quite interesting. Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering what this is - the soundhole makes me think Rob Armstrong, but it doesn't look like his A inlay on the headstock. But likely a UK luthier built instrument, that existed in the late 80s. Any ideas?
Donnie starts at about 2.55, if you don't fancy sitting through the whole show.

There are a couple of places where you can *almost* read some of what it says on the label inside, but I can’t get a freeze frame quite clear enough to read it.

I agree, it’s definitely a small-company luthier-built guitar, almost certainly British or possibly Irish, but I can’t remember ever seeing one exactly like it.

  • From the shape of the soundhole and the headstock my guess would be Tony  Zemaitis, one of his less exotic ones!

The overall shape and format of the label is quite close to some of the Zemaitis acoustics, but then "rectangle with a border around it" might not be very conclusive.

I always associate Zemaitis guitars with rock royalty, though I suppose Donnie Dòtaman has rock star status to the gaelic speaking under-10s of the 1980s!

All Zemaitis are different, and i thought the same when seeing headstock shape and inlays.   but I think this is inspired by rather than from Tony himself

Best i can do on the soundhole label

definitely similar handwriting on the first examples i can see, so maybe an earlier one.  If you assume the label in the vid says "GUITAR 6 String" on the top line

  • I think the third line has "MACGREGOR" - very interesting!

Abnett does feel likely, he built for a lot of folkies (some of Donal Lunny's bouzoukis, for instance), so he seems in the right kind of circle of people.

I thought of Moon due to the Scottish connection but I'd never seen a Moon with anything other than that pointed/tapered headstock.
