Point to point Zonk

What's Hot

I used to be well into pedal building over ten years ago but stopped. Recently bought a Zonk-type fuzz which inspired me to have a go at building a point to point version of a Reeves Zonk (which go for silly money), after seeing a build on youtube by 'Gray Bench Electronics'.
Worked straight away too!

  • nice work. if that sounds as good as it looks then it must be awesome.

Nice work indeed but they look like carbon comp' resistors? Metal film Rs will reduce noise by a few dB.

    Wow very tidy.

Should we have an internal wiring appreciation thread :+1:

    Nice! Which circuit is this?

I've got a few PCBs from B.G.Harding to make a Zonk Machine, which has 3 transistors.

    This is a Reeves ZO

  • This looks awesome. Stupid question: why point to point? Is it just a fun challenge or is there some other benefit?

It was just a fun challenge to be honest. Built lots on PCB and very board but never tried this.

  • That's a great reason to do it. I like it because to my simple brain, the end results look more like a circuit diagram than a PCB does.

Reeves’ Zo is a mk2 zonk which is a different circuit, the BG Harding Board is based on a mk1 despite it having various germanium/silicon options

This is a fabulous build - good effort. It's also given me a kick-up-the-bum to get back into some pedal building. I've a few veroboard layouts ready to populate, but Im now thinking a P2P affair.
So, thoughts on suitable small circuits that aren't fuzz? (the CE-2 P2P can wait till next year!)
    Naga Viper?
    Lovepedal Woodrow/electra?

Thanks. I recently say a P2P op amp muff build, that was crazy!

P2P ce2 in the style above would be quite something. I’ve started (slowly) the tagboard version that was on Hello Sailor’s YouTube recently. Someone on here sent me a layout for a P2P copy of a Reeves Leo, could did it out and send it over?

Yes, I've watched that video, with inspiration. I've a couple of his pedals already, absolute top bloke.
Maybe a p2p ce2 could work as a forum project? Housed in a large biscuit tin???

This was some Pete Cornish inspired madness that I built a good few years back.

I like the Zonk build as well! I've got a copy of a Shatterbox which I believe is a Zonk with a built in switchable boost and it's an unusual but very useful fuzz sound.

Yeah ditto- it's a Zonk II in the Shatterbox, isn't it? I think the Zonk II is 2 transistor (more like a Fuzzface) while the original Zonk is 3-transistor (more like a Tonebender Mk II). (I hope I don't have that backwards!)

I'd say the same about the treble booster in it ("unusual but very useful")- it sounds a fair bit different from a Rangemaster, but still very nice.

Ah I didn't know that,  might have to try a v1 Zonk at some point then.

I was inspired by Reeves to try point-to-point a couple of years ago.  Mainly to see if I could build a £300 pedal for £30.

First was a tagstrip 183Sound (Coloursound One Knob Fuzz):

and then the full point-to-point copy of the Reeves Leo:

It is quite good fun dealing with big chunky components rather than just populating a PCB.  I did start to try and work out how to convert my veroboard Lovepedal JTM into a tagstrip build, but never got it sorted out
