I went to some shoe shops but didn’t come out much the wiser. So, despite some of the above comments, ordered some Skecher Tom Cats online. Due to a cock up with delivery they have taken a week to arrive but they have refunded me all delivery costs so £7 off. They look rather school shoe but they seem fine.

That is is actually pretty much the type of shoe I want.  I shall bear it in mind.

    (Still haven't bought any.)

The day I wear anything by Ecco, Hotter or chuffing Skechers is the day I give up and book myself in an old people's home!!!
    Ah - you're a Pavers chap then.
Never forget that you are wearing your invisible tiara.

We went to stay with some friends in Somerset last weekend and did some walking on Exmoor.  Half way around, I noticed my Berghaus walking boots felt a bit odd.  Here's what happened - to BOTH soles.  I've had them a few years but as you can see, they haven't had much wear:  They appear to have disintegrated.

These photos were taken in an outdoor store where I bought a pair of Grisport Dartmoor walking shoies.  The Berghaus boots went in the shop's bin before I left, but I'll be sending Berhaus these pics.  Pretty disgraceful.
Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose

When we cleared out my dad's house we found a shoe box in a cupboard which was full of some weird fluffy stuff, almost like downy feathers, with a few bits of rubber and plastic... as far as we could figure out, it must have been a very old pair of trainers which just... biodegraded.

Seriously though, thanks everyone.  Some of these are more formal than I would go for, some are maybe too much of a "serious" walking shoe, but lots to look into.  Several mentions of Meindl and I'd never even heard of them, so they certainly warrant further investigation.
Have you tried Børn shoes before?  They are the most comfortable shoes and boots I’ve ever worn, though I’ve never worn any of those other British makers that have been recommended in here that also look quite nice.

I haven't.  I'll add them to the list, although some of them are the type of shoes we used to call "pasties" in school....

I've mentioned these chappies previously, although it looks like they've just been tweaked a tad :anguished:

I've just returned from a week in Iberia and decided to part with my 2.5 year old pair of the above at Faro airport. Over a beer I recalled the mileage I've done wearing those shoes and listed the countries we've visited/walked in:

    Scotland
    England
    Wales
    Ireland
    Norway
    Canada
    USA
    Germany
    France
    Belgium
    Netherlands
    Luxembourg
    Poland
    Denmark
    Sweden
    Spain
    Portugal
    Italy
    Switzerland
    Monaco
    Austria
    Greece

As I have mentioned on previous threads, if you want comfort and value for money then I'd say these will deliver big time ... if you want trends, looks and show them look elsewhere.

They're currently £15 BTW ... I shall be bagging two pairs tomorrow because I'm now using the new pair I had for return from from holiday.
