Keep the strings light. Young new players do find their fingertips can get sore with steel strings until caluses develop although he may be part way along that road if he’s been playing a ukulele already.

If those strings are still a bit much for him then you could do worse than pop a set of silk & steel types on there as they slacken the tension even further.

I have a 10yr old grandson who has expressed an interest. I didn't know Yamaha did 3/4 size steel strung acoustics, I thought they only did classicals in that size. My ignorance!
Yes Yamaha do the JR1, JR2 and JR2s which are 3/4 size and suit my 12 year old nephew well. I did some Googling and reviews said the Yamaha was a good quality guitar for the money so I saw them popping up in FB marketplace between £30 and £80 which I thought was even better value for money once cleaned up and a new set of strings installed. eBay prices are over £100 used though the JR1 retail is £149.
