While away with work (which is where I score most of my bargains) I collect this Yamaha JR1 3/4 sized acoustic for my nephew who has got along with his uke very well.  So sort of a NGD but only briefly. It's odd playing such a cute little guitar.

It's in good condition but needs the usual TLC as the fretboard is as dry as a bone, new strings and maybe some fret levelling.

What a great uncle! Good choice.

Keep the strings light. Young new players do find their fingertips can get sore with steel strings until caluses develop although he may be part way along that road if he’s been playing a ukulele already.

Got these yesterday from Alpha music shop. Should do the trick.

  • Congrats!

If those strings are still a bit much for him then you could do worse than pop a set of silk & steel types on there as they slacken the tension even further.

Lemon oiled the fretboard and Vaseline sticked the nut (cherry cola is my favourite :yum:  ) ready for new strings and then dropping over to my nephew's.

Great choice - I've 2 Yamaha acoustics myself.  Re strings, I'd suggest D'addario .010-.047 Phosphor Bronze (EJ15's) would be easier on the fingers & stay cleaner & brighter for much longer than 80/20's.

Just an observation, but might this thread perhaps not be best in the acoustic section?
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

Don't know why? Where would you suggest?
    It relates to acoustic.
I have a 10yr old grandson who has expressed an interest. I didn't know Yamaha did 3/4 size steel strung acoustics, I thought they only did classicals in that size. My ignorance!
     :)

Voxman was suggesting moving the thread from the Guitar cat to the acoustic cat which is what I did.

Yes Yamaha do the JR1, JR2 and JR2s which are 3/4 size and suit my 12 year old nephew well. I did some Googling and reviews said the Yamaha was a good quality guitar for the money so I saw them popping up in FB marketplace between £30 and £80 which I thought was even better value for money once cleaned up and a new set of strings installed. eBay prices are over £100 used though the JR1 retail is £149.
