That said, it's seven shows in selected cities, so it's hardly proper touring.  Maybe they'll use it as a tester, see how they are received in the new form and see whether they still have the chops for it.
Twelve shows, seven cities.  With quite big gaps in-between, which I assume are for rest and recuperation rather than allowing for extra dates.

    Yeah, that’s what I meant.

There's a piece of Nerina in every song that I sing

If ever there was a time for El Estepario Siberiano to tour with a quality band, this would be it.  I think he would do Neil's parts justice.

Whenever tickets are extortionate, I just end up buying all the studio albums on CD instead.

    I predict:

Tickets will be like rocking horse poo, and priced as such; the shows will sound amazing, save for the limitations of Geddy’s ageing voice; the woman with the Adam Lambert-style task of filling in for a dead legend will be brilliant - Ged and Alex know exactly what they’re doing - but will face inevitable comparisons and criticism; setlist choices will be picked apart by fans; and when they pay tribute to Peart, there won’t be a dry eye in the house.

In the video announcing the shows, the warmth, love and excitement to be doing this again was palpable. That alone makes all of those totally valid and worthwhile, IMO.

I will be at the front of the queue for tickets when they come back and play at Stafford county show ground just as they did in 1979 - it's quite something to think that a huge group like Rush played such a small venue.

The gig was in the agricultural hall, more often used for showing cattle than rock bands, although I did see Rainbow and The Police there too - happy days!

I first saw Rush at Bingley Hall, Stafford, in 1981 on the Exit Stage Left tour.  Fantastic gig.

    Some good memories.
Similarly I saw them for the first time at Bingley Hall in 1979 on the Hemesphere's tour - my first ever gig.

I'm Sooooooo envious of you guys who saw them years ago. Really wish I'd seen them somewhere between later 70 and 85. If I could choose any it would be the Signals tour as that's my fave Rush album, but sadly I was a student with no money then.

  • I was asked if I wanted to go circa 2012/13 but I wasn't big enough of a fan to pay £70+ for a ticket to their Manchester show...  I would change that now for sure..  I do hope Geddy's voice is managed for these shows; some of the R40 footage highlighted struggles that all older vocalists can encounter.
    My trading feedback

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

My first Rush show was in 1997 on the Test for Echo tour.  My best mate and I decided we were big enough fans to fly to Toronto to see their two gigs at the Molson Amphitheatre since they had no plans to bring the show to Europe.

The first show on June 29th was recorded for a live album but for technical reasons it never happened.  I'm sooooo glad about that as one camera came right up to us and got a good few seconds of 20 year old me wearing a Dire Straits t-shirt trying to look pumped - I've always been of the quiet appreciation type of fan at concerts, but felt like I needed to put on a performance with a camera in my face.

I think Alex has mentioned that show and the footage, and that they really should try to do something with it.  I really hope they don't!  Or at least I hope that piece of footage never surfaces.  There are bits and pieces of it on YouTube but a lot less than there used to be.

I saw them on the Vapor Trails tour, again had to fly to New York to see that as they missed UK and Europe again.  I then saw them on the R30 tour - asked my first wife to marry me at that gig, well, she was my girlfriend then, of course.  Then Snakes and Arrows and Time Machine after that and finally the Clockwork Angels tour.

I was a bit gutted they never brought R40 to Europe.  As much as I'm a huge fan, I don't think I'll be making any effort to see this tour.  It'll be expensive, even without the price of concert tickets which will be extortionate, and I'm not convinced it'll be worth it, part of me fears they'll screw the pooch.  Plus, do I really want to travel to the US in its current state?  I suppose Mexico or Toronto again would be possible, but I don't really want to set foot on American soil at the moment if I can help it.

Just to rub it in.  I saw them on that tour as well at the NEC, Birmingham.

The only time I ever saw them live was on the Hold Your Fire tour in 1988, which is a bit ironic as that's my least favourite of all their albums, although of course at the time it was just their current release.  I don't remember anything about the show, except that it was at Wembley Arena and I was in the standing section, so I probably couldn't see anything.

(Edit:  Apparently the support act was Wishbone Ash.  I didn't think I'd ever seen them live... I have a feeling we arrived late and missed their set altogether.)

If they eventually add some UK dates to this tour then I'll want to go, but let's see what happens.  If it was somewhere huge like Wembley Stadium I wouldn't bother.

Stadium shows have been mentioned a few times in this thread but they've never played anywhere larger than the usual arenas in the UK & Europe since they became a 'big' band in the early '80s to the best of my knowledge.

They aren't doing stadia in North America, so why would they over here?

I don't know how bands set about planning tours and figuring out the size of audience they expect to attract.  I was just observing that I wouldn't want to go to a stadium show.

    Great choice of drummer.

I am going to try to get tickets to a Toronto show, as I have friends in that city who will put us up and come with.
    Very exciting news.

  • I saw them on the Permanent Waves tour at Newcastle City Hall and the Moving Pictures tour. I vividly remember the first gig because the stage had large carpets on it and about 10 minutes before they came on stage a roadie came out with a hoover and cleaned the carpets!
I’ve always loved this classic photo of them at the City Hall.

That was the album that killed Rush for me. I LOVED everything before, I didn't like HYF at all. It was the last album of theirs that I bought on release. I eventually bought everything that came after, but didn't really like any of them. Having said that, I've always LOVED the guys! I will aways consider myself a big Rush fan as they were huge for me in my youth.
