Can songs that use the I-V-vi-IV chord progression ever be good ?

Since Axis of Awesome released their 'Four chord song' in 2011, highlighting the ubiquity of the old C,G,Am,F, I think it's actually become worse.  You can't get away from it now....  not a day will go by without you hearing that chord sequence multiple times.

So my question is; can a new I-V-vi-IV chord progression song ever be any good ?
God Bless the Disunited States of Dumbfuckistan.

    Yes.
I must be a narcissist, God knows that I can't resist, to make a song and dance about it?

It's been done to death equally in the Nashville postcode of m6 - 4 - 1 - 5 as well but I don't think it's the intervals, more the lack of imagination from there on. I mean With or Without you is a 1-5-6-4 but the way it builds and falls away hold the interest.

^ I was just thinking of that song as I read this thread. Yes it’s quite a unique take on the ole 1564.

Since You Been Gone is also slightly different
G4U: Need and want are different things. If I bought guitars based on need, I wouldn’t own any.

  • It's all about the melody over it as many sound similar but for the vocals.

Some progressions go back a previous chord or add another one in between as well to try to get away from it but my ear just expects the next one in the progression anyway!
