I've nearly always played in two guitar bands and coming up with separate parts is cool. Depending on the style though sometimes you'll have to double up and play the same thing at times, so its got to be really tight.

It really depends on who you’re playing with and what the songs are.  I’ve loved playing with someone on an electro-acoustic while I’ve played an electric.

I was in a 2 guitar band that was heavily influenced by the NWOBHM and a bit later twin guitar harmony bands. Maiden / Priest / Wishbone Ash, then Testament and so on.

Tightness for that starts with a rock solid drummer which we had, fortunately. Unless you've got someone of Hetfield's supernatural talent being a 5 piece so the guitarists / bassist doesn't have to sing the lead vox is also rather important.

That being said, we were writing originals so the writing process automatically goes with the capabilities of the people writing. That's easier than learning someone else's rhythmic patterns. When we threw in a cover or two they were usually simpler songs!

I would prefer to be the only Guitarist in a band. However, I'd rather have the a Keyboardist behind me to make me sound better.

I think it depends on how disciplined you both are. You need to stick to your roles or quite easy to cancel yourself or other guitarist out.
You need to be able to complement each other. Personally I loved Mick Taylor with Keith Richards, but Keith and Ron doesnt work for me.
