Tonemaster Princeton Speaker Swap?

I don't doubt the Tonemaster Princeton sounds great and that the technology offers many benefits. A standard Princeton is a bit too loud for most home scenarios at around 5 on the volume where it starts to come alive, but a simple L-pad attenuator works brilliantly to get the amp singing at reasonable volumes. Any tone-suck is marginal if even noticeable.

    Change of plan here guys,

I’ve just bought a Tonemaster Bassman second hand. Will report when the bassman arrives from Guitar Guitar later in the week.

The tone master deluxe is great for home, rehearsal and small gigs. The Princeton might not give me much more than the deluxe.

i sold my Victory v40 deluxe head today and wanted some lighter that would fill that gap.

    The super looks ace btw.

I see the OP has come to a different resolution now but out of interest...

With the TMPR having the same stock speaker as the '65 PRRI, wouldn't any speaker swap that works well in a PRRI also work well in a TMPR?

I think the power amp of the Tonemaster is a higher output than the original (on paper at least), I might be cautious with some popular choices that are cutting it fine for power handling.

Far higher - 50W for the Princeton. OK, this is to make sure that the power amp has enough guaranteed clean headroom to reproduce a fully overdriven valve power stage, but it does mean you need to be careful if that's what you're going to do. In theory the maximum possible power output of an overdriven 12W amp is 24W, so if the modelling has been done correctly then a speaker rated at 25W RMS or 50W 'music power' should be OK... but that's if the modelling has been done correctly.

I see the standard C10R is rated for 25w, so I assume anything with a rating of at least that, and that is generally considered to sound good in a PRRI, would work in a TMPR?

Yes, it should - but bear in mind that Jensen ratings are not particularly conservative (much less so than Celestion), and that you need to be sure the modelling correctly limits the signal output to 24W fully overdriven. Even then, speaker rating isn’t an exact science and it depends how you use it - a worst case would be something like a hollowbody guitar feeding back with the amp at full power, so you’re getting the maximum output continuously.

So it *should* be OK, but not guaranteed - to be really sure you probably need a 50W (RMS) speaker.

I am very much looking forward to your report about the bassman!

@fretmeister the bassman is some piece of gear.   Only tried at home so far but brilliant mix of classic sounds and mod cons.   The feel and tone of this thing is exceptional!

I ordered a bassman a few weeks ago, great amp and sounds superb but decided it wasn’t my thing.
I returned it and bought aTM twin reverb in blonde, it’s more me.

@markj was thinking that route as well. Trying to reduce reliance on pedals tho.

    Tell us about the twin.

Had it for just over a week and sounds wonderful even at low volumes.
It takes pedals superbly well and does have a richer tone compared to the DR. probably  because of the
2x12 speakers, also like the mid control over the DR bass and treble.

Sounds great. Can it get mid rangey tones at edge of breakup without pedals?

I'm guessing you don't have to deal with 2 lifts, 3 sets of fire doors and a massive car park with yours...

I have a trolley which is amazing but the DR fits perfectly width-ways through a doorway and anything bigger means 2 trips if I want to take guitar, amp and pedals which is not fun :(
