I don't really want any more than two for my personal use these days ... but A hollow body Gretsch and a Tele ... then add more Teles to taste ...

If it were a money no object fantasy list it would probably still be fairly similar to what I have: a couple of really nice Teles, a nice Cabronita, a nice Strat and then an unfilled wildcard slot for something like a PRS, or giving Gibson another try, or a HH Suhr or similar

Most Gretsches are fitted with humbuckers ... Filtertrons. Admittedly I swapped my Filtertrons for Dynasonics ... but I like that 'ruder' tone.

That if the LP has P90s, or if the LP has humbuckers I'd be tempted to go for something with P90s instead of the 335...
    Good point @Dave_Mc ;;;;

Maybe an Epiphone Casino instead of the 335 would be a good shout.

I was thinking that too and it's a good call as it'd kill two birds with one stone by also covering the hollowbody thing but- based on my Eastman- the lack of upper-fret access would annoy me if it were my only P90 guitar. I think there were some 330s with better upper-fret access but supposedly (according to the internet- I haven't tried them!) they didn't sound just as good.

I would try and have 5 guitars that offer 5 different things sonically, but I suppose with the tone knob etc, you can make 1 guitar do for lots of different sounds. But maybe something like:
    A strat
A tele (a strat can sound like a tele and vice versa)
A humbucker guitar (335 or LP or SG, or you could get a HSS strat!)
    Something with filtertron style pickups
Something with P90s or lipstick pickups (a Danelectro Convertible for a hollow body with a lipstick!)

Or out of the 5 make sure 1 is a semi hollow or full hollow body, for something different.

If you are a metal head, something with a locking trem system.

Yep agreed, that's pretty much what I was doing- at least the 4 main/most popular pickup types which are usually (citation needed!) considered to be PAF-style humbucker, Strat, Tele and P90.

While I was tempted to go for another different pickup (and/or guitar) type for the 5th, I thought it was more useful to go for the locking trem/superstrat spec considering that's really my favourite style of guitar and suits what I play the most. If I could only have one guitar, it'd be a superstrat, and not just because it's arguably  the most versatile guitar there is if you have to cover a lot of sonic ground. They also have a sound and feel of their own which is arguably perfect for the styles of msic I play most- 80s rock and metal really.  EDIT: Also I could go with hotter pickups in the superstrat to cover a bit more ground.

If I could have another one or two a semi or fully-hollow would be in there but- again for what I mainly play- the solidbodies suit me better even though I totally agree having some air in there is "more different". It's a balance between "different" and "what suits you".

I think, for me anyway two is quite enough. One Strat and one Tele. I have two acoustics also. Who could really want for more?

    5 you say?
Ok so in no particular order

    Les paul standard
    SG special (p90s)
    63 reissue strat
    52 reissue tele
    Gretch 6119 tennessean

That lot will cover almost every base shy of hair metal

Hey Dawb, just saw your list and I'm after an ES-335....... what's your connection to a '79?  Is that particularly good year or your year of birth or something?

Regardless of my previous response I now just happen to have exactly five guitars…

    3 Strats of various flavours
    1 Tele
    1 Yamaha Pacifica Professional

… and I feel, guitar-wise, that I’m pretty much where I want to be.

Strats are my preferred ‘live’ guitars so three gives me options and backups.

The Tele was a present from Mrs9000 for my 50th so has sentimental value and will never be sold. Due to fret wear it’s now semi retired.

The Pacifica Pro is just a superb instrument. Sure, it won’t be replacing my Strats as a regular gigging guitar but will get the occasional outing when I fancy something a bit different.
Don’t even look at it! Don’t touch it! Don’t point even...ok, you’ve seen enough of that one.

I would have one more than I have…

    Strat
    Tele
    PRS CU24
    Gibson Les Paul Special

…so I have single coils, P90s and humbuckers covered

I really don’t need another but have an SG itch that I need to scratch at some point :)

…or maybe a non reverse Firebird but they are harder to find and spendy
This is the truth from hillbilly guitars!

Currently, I have 5: Tele, Tele, Strat, Les Paul, Semi-hollow.

The Strat is likely out the door soon. But if it's five for life, then I might replace a Tele with something fully hollow or archtop.
