Cheap used bass for 11 year old

My boy suddenly wanted to buy a bass at Christmas when I was in a guitar shop. Having heard nothing of this I said no but said we'd find something to try out. Managed to get an aria pro ii stb series with little rumble amp from the local library to borrow! Which is obviously amazing but the third fret is high. Anyway I've said he can buy himself one as he has some money saved. What would you recommend? Annoyingly I'm in southern Ireland so getting something on here not that practical when I'm hoping to get one for less than 200. I could do a setup on a cheap bass but honestly I can't really be arsed levelling and crowning a bass neck. He's well grown (size 8 feet!) And strong so I'm less worried about the size and weight than the playability but I don't actually play bass so maybe I'm way wrong on that from. If he's really playing in a few years we'd likely build him one. Any helpful suggestions appreciated. I'd rather not by new from China thomann stuff etc but I'd happily buy that stuff second hand.
Thanks all

My son started on a squier jaguar short scale bass. A really good entry level instrument. He still has it now but has bought several since then.

I got my son an east coast short scale from andertons and it's been great.

I bought my daughter a black ibanez talman short scale 4 string bass about 6 years ago which is only gathering dust in the spare room. I am in County Meath.  I would love to see someone get some use out of it.

At aged eleven, the smart investment is to pay for a tech to sort out the high fret on the short scale Aria.

Keep any savings in reserve until your son can cope with a 34" scale.

Even after that, the Aria is a good, reliable instrument to keep as a back-up for when strings break at gigs. (I know a bassist who has a nasty habit of doing this!) Another option would be to restring for piccolo bass (one octave up) but I do not know who supplies the strings for that.

It's not my aria, I have it on loan from the library. I could do it myself but the strings are pretty beat and I don't want to try to put them back on after. So this aria is short scale? I don't know anything about bass guitars sorry

    My mistake.

Squier, Sterling By Musicman, Ibanez/Soundgear SR300, whatever.
