I have a Redplate Astrodust with the 2x12 oval back and looking to replace one of the speakers to a celestion G12H creamback ...has any one tried the combination or can recommend something ...or am I just being fussy and staying with 2x vintage 30s which sounds fine ....but just going down the route of can I make it better ..I do blues/ rock mainly in a 3 piece

It pairs really well with a G12H-75 Creamback or a Classic Lead 80, depending on whether you want to go in an old school hard rock (H75) or a more modern rock (CL80) direction - or with a G12T-75 for metal. But given you want blues/rock I would go with the G12H-75.

Thanks very much .. so would this be a noticeable improvement on the 2 vintage 30s by just replacing one or am I maybe just going to see a slight improvement

It will open out the bottom end and take away a bit of the upper-mid peak of the V30s, and possibly add a bit of treble depending on how bright the amp is (I'm not familiar with it). Hard to say if you'll find it a noticeable improvement or fairly subtle... you're unlikely to find out without trying it.

I'm considering the same thing with my Cornford V30 2x12

Was originally thinking H75 as it sounds nicely balanced overall getting what I could glean from recordings but the description of CL80 has  now piqued my interest as it would be more for alt rock/hair metal/NWOBHM type tones than old school rock, as much fun as that is.

If you try it I'll be interested to hear how you get on

  • FWIW, I swapped one of the V30s in my Orange open-back 2x12 for a Creamback H75 and it does sound very good.  I wanted a bit of a clearer top end and was too miserly to buy two H75s, but the combination sounds excellent (with a Rocker 30 head)

The Creamback sounds *epic* with a V30. I have a cab sat next to me with that set up... properly lovely.

  • As mentioned, creamback for the win. I’ve been running this combo for over 10 years now and it’s great.

I have a 2 x 12 cab with a V30 and a G12-65. I like it so far and it's quite versatile (for cleans up to dirty blues/rock -  I don't play hard rock or metal) , although I haven't done extensive experiments with other options.
