NAD - I bought a Splawn Nitro...

What's Hot

This Splawn Nitro popped up on my Reverb feed not far away from me in Glasgow for a silly low amount of money and I duly raided my Synergy 20IR fund (again) and went and bought it:

Thus far I'm quite impressed - it is very much in the modded Marshall sort of territory but with a lot of bass. Its reminiscent of the Bogner Ubershall in that regard but somehow Splawn are getting that response out of EL34’s.

My one observation so far is that it seems to much prefers passive pickups than active ones, to be fair it probably got to do with the frankly incredible amounts of gain on tap.

Liking it so far anyway, it coming to practice this week which should be interesting!

I nearly bought that  looks great and the price was hard to resist. I thought it might be a bit modern for my tastes. Which are stuck in the 70s.

Yeah Modern is exactly the right way to put it, it is kind of Marshall but with a lot more bass that I would associate with that type of sound. Even things like the Gowers and Fortins basically take the Marshall sound and add gain, well okay a lot more gain.

I’ve not tried to make it sound like an old school Marshall, that could be tonight’s fun :)

@Moe_Zambeek Did you get sorted for an older Marshall?

I remember when these were hot shit on HCAF back in the late 2000’s. Good times.

Was that the one at £750?

    Bargain of the decade!

I was never on there but they were the talk of Rig Talk for a bit as well - more the Quickmod I think than the Nitro. That said I can see why it is very nice!

Indeed it was that one - I was astonished at the price and also the fact there was actually a bit of gear in Scotland that I was actually interested in too! Normally I've got to ship stuff, not so bad with amps but a little nerve racking with expensive guitars :)

Yeah the Quickrod was always the one I remember being talked about way back then- the Nitro came along a little later after Splawn had already made a name for itself and was a bit more modern in tone I think. (I say that having never been able to try either!)

    Awesome score @webrthomson ;;

Thanks @Dave_Mc - yeah I tried a Quickmod in a guitar shop in Philadelphia and remembered liking it quite a lot, so the Nitro seemed a like a great deal and something I was very likely to like too! :)

Ah that's good that you were able to try out the Quickrod- as you said, quite often manufacturers have a kind of family type of tone, if you like one you're very likely to like another one. :)

If you're near Glasgow let me know and I can make that happen! :)

You would not be disappointed either. It very articulate on the gain side and the clean is phenomenal!
