Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit live last night

I've put this in Guitars rather than Music because, well, as the photos show - this man brings his fine collection of Harley Benton and Squier replicas with him on tour to Europe. 

@Stickyfiddle - you'll appreciate this!

Gig was immense and epic and intimate and beautiful and raw. Great to see him in Belfast - he'd been before I think, but I missed him then. Even played a couple of Drive-By Truckers tracks which was even better.

Amps were a couple of Magnatone combos, a Vibroverb and a High Power Tweed Twin. Oof!  ***Edit*** I missed the Dumble hidden behind the keyboards, right in the middle. I'm amazed he brings all this vintage gear with him.

Guitar of the night was the Goldtop P90 with Bigsby. The grunt from that was trouser-flappingly good. 

Highly recommend going to see him - the band are fantastic and the guitars are drool-worthy. The other guitarist also had some absolute crackers - reverse firebird, couple of SGs, a Rick etc.

As for "the other guitarist" - that's Mr Sadler Vader to you, sir!!

I did note he's had what I assumed to be a '57 goldtop on instagram lately - any sign of that too or just the P90 one?

I'll be at RAH next week and then I'll no doubt be updating my reverb feed...

Just the P90 but it has made me fall in love. A '57 Goldtop flashing it's eyes at me wouldn't cause me to stray. You'll see...

P.S. Amongst the incredible setlist my stand-outs were Overseas, The King of Oklahoma, Decoration Day and an absolutely epic Miles.

Is it ok to admit I don't like Miles that much?

But the rest of the setlist looks basically perfect. Alabama Pines! Hope The High Road! GLL and DD! 

How many of the Foxes tracks were full band? There's a great Gravelweed online but I'd love to hear more.

Pretty much all tracks were full band. A couple just two acoustics and stand up bass but, from memory, other band members filtered in towards the end. 

And, no, it's not alright to admit you don't like Miles. I've gone right off you now.

Did you catch the opening act? It's a guy from his band name Will Johnson who's a great musician in his own right. He recently teamed up with the members of Magnolia Electric Co. and is killing it:

He's also the 2nd drummer & 3rd guitarist in the 400 Unit!

Seen him twice, both times outstanding! Last time he didn’t bring anywhere near the amount of vintage guitars he has at his disposal.  The P90 Goldtop was missing and was replaced by one of the Gibson Custom shop ‘Red Eye’ replicas with a bigsby attached for the songs where the Goldtop would have been.  Sounded brilliant regardless.  Also, he brought that lovely red 3 pickup Les Paul custom which is possibly one of the coolest guitars I’ve ever seen. 

Sadler Vader is an absolute monster guitarist, couldn’t imagine a better second guitar player in his band to be honest.  Cant catch them this time round in Manchester, but have no doubt it will be a rocker!

I've long been a fan of Will. Promoted his bands Centro-matic and San South Gabriel a couple times...

One of the nicest Les Paul’s I think I’ve ever seen.  It’s sounded killer, but I’d imagine most things would in his hands and through those amps.

Yeah, I had a go when it was on consignment in Retrofret back in January… 

It was lovely and obviously mad rarity value, plus the JI connection is brilliant. But not as amazing as the black 56 staple-pickup one they also had. Not that I can afford either

Nice to see he’s bringing some of the big guns with him this time. I was disappointed last time out when he stuck with mostly the Bigsby-fied Red Eye Custom Shop, and the ‘65 Tele. Outstanding guitars in their own right, but when you’re aware of some of the stuff he has……
