Andertons pre-order

I'm interested in buying a guitar from Andertons online, but it's currently out of stock and only available for pre-order. Their website says 'More stock due in 3 months or longer'.

I've never bought a guitar online and it's a lot of money, so just after some advice/reassurance. Is there any reason I should be wary of pre-ordering? When they say 'more stock due', does this mean they've already ordered them in, or only that they intend to at some point?

It could mean that they’ve got more stock on order and it’ll be three months until they’re in the store or it could mean that once you place your order today it will then take three months from the order going through to the store receiving it.

Personally, I would want confirmation from someone as to what story actually is before handing over any money.

Call them and ask, they could better advise. They may know from experience with different suppliers how long ot may be.

I've always taken it to mean they have them on back order and the 3 months is a vague guideline.

I've seen things pushed back and back before.

Different company but I ordered a strap from guitarguitar on 26th Jan this year and the website said 'due on the Friday of that week'.

Then it said the Monday of the next week.
Then it said the next month before changing to 'pre-order this item and we'll deliver it when its available'.

I actually forgot about it and remembered last week, meant to contact them to just cancel it, but hadnt got around to it.. and then got an email today to say it will be delivered tomorrow lol..

Funny thing is, I dont need it, and kinda don't want it any more lol!

One thing I dislike about Andertons is that they take 100% of the money upfront... loads of other shops will be happy with a deposit, which is much more comfortable for me. I very rarely preorder anything unless I know quantities will be stupid limited, and when I do I try to go with a retailer who will do 10% or whatever instead. The money is better in my account in the interim!

    Thanks @GoldenEraGuitars, @skunkwerx. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

@Whitecat, good point. Just checked their website and it does say they'll accept a 10% deposit, but when you click through the purchase links there's no such option. Might have to do it over the phone. I'd be far more comfortable not handing over hundreds of pounds without a clear ETA!

Personally I'd only preorder something expensive via credit card - I'm sure I'm just paranoid but given how many guitar shops have gone bust in the last few years I'm afraid I don't really trust any of them to sit on a large sum of my money for months on end.

    Maybe I'm just depressingly cynical...

Ah okay maybe they will do that if you contact them. I know I've looked before online and have never seen the option!

I don’t much like Andertons (like many - I favour Coda and Peach) but you can reserve with a 10% deposit and you won’t have any issues getting it back

I would, however, call or email to get clarity on lead times

I seem to remember calling them when putting down a deposit, so I reckon you’ll be grand

Never had any issue with Andertons. They’re one of the good ones IMO. I had some lead time on my recent purchase. Wasn’t an issue. They kept me informed. I didn’t do a deposit, though. I paid upfront.

Can the guitar you're after be acquired anywhere else or is it an Andertons exclusive ?

I would never pre-order. Why tie up your money?

I do it on stuff that essentially sells out in preorder - and I can only remember two times I have done it - the original signed Fender Shields Blender and the Boss Waza TB-2W. Both sold out in hours if not minutes of going on sale.

Well fair play, I emailed late last night and they replied before 9am. They've placed an order with the manufacturer and are expecting 16 units by mid-September at the earliest.

I'll phone them to put down a deposit but will check their terms first. Want to know whether I can pull out and recover my deposit should there be a long delay.

It's a limited edition. Can't find it for sale elsewhere. Guitar Guitar did have them listed in the past but there's no sign that they intend to restock.

Long ago, in a galaxy far away, I pre-ordered a PRS Reclaimed series guitar from Anderton's. There was a short, fixed order window at PRS. They had limited resources from which to build two models, in accordance with customer demand.

I have forgotten how many times I was contacted to be told that the delivery date had been pushed back again. Each time, I was offered the opinion to cancel my order and be fully refunded.

I stuck it out. The wait was roughly nine months. I still have the guitar. IMO, it was worth all the aggravation.

At today's prices, I would be reluctant to stump up the full price up front on anything much more expensive than a Behringer synthesizer.
