Process for Gibson Cherry Red?

Calling on the assembled gentlemen, 

I have a bare '58 DC Jnr husk that I want to finish in cherry red. 

I'm going to be spraying with a gun, got red, blue, Amber & brown analine dyes but I'm getting conflicting info on the process. 

Do I stain the grain filler cherry then just clear coat or grain fill, colour the sanding sealer then clear or fill, seal, colour, clear? 

I've read conflicting things on the net so looking for the 'definitive answer' to how gibson did it back in the late 50's.

I eventually want it to fade to a cherry/brown colour. 

Regarding dyes, I mix red with a touch of blue and a bit of brown also? 

I've posted this over on the MLP forum but they don't seem very willing to release these 'hallowed secrets'! ;-)

Any help would be gratefully received :-)

Stain the filler. You'll see on an old faded finish the red filler left in the pores.

Filling the pores will also stain the wood as much as is needed.

Then just hit it with clear sanding sealer then lacquer or just lacquer.

I'm planning one of these myself in the New Year so if you want to see how it turns out...?
