iwatch?

What's Hot

Anyone bought one or planning to get one?

I was just thinking of getting another watch for daily use (my planet ocean is a big heavy beast) and looking at a hamilton but I'm tempted to try an iwatch instead.

I don't have an iPhone so it would be useless to me I guess, but in general my opinion is 'do not be an early adopter'.

I wear an auto every day and don't really want that to change, but I'm very interested to see if the Apple Watch takes off and by the 3rd gen it should be a very good bit of kit.

Yeah, wait. It'll be obsolete in 2 years.

but the next model will be obsolete a couple of years after that...

I'm interested in how responsive and useable they are in practise,  what the battery life is like,  how practical it is to have music on the watch and use a bluetooth headset...   I can see it being a handy gadget but I'd like to see a few more reviews before I grab one.

I had a good run through the features today, it does appeal to me but like stickyfiddle im running an automatic which I'm happy with. A concern is that it's likely to have a life span similar to a phone and with an average cost of £600 that's a lot to write off every three or four years compared to my pattern of conventional watch purchases.

My tattoos are well away from my wrists so that's not an issue - handy to know though....

From what I can see, delivery seems to be July for most models, which kind of slows down my impulse purchase.  I'll probably buy another auto and then check them out in a couple of months when there should be plenty of reviews and a couple of software updates.

    I last bought a watch in 1987.

I can't see someone who owns a 'nice' watch buying one of these.

I am usually an Apple early adopter but this time I'm waiting.

We know the battery life isn't even a day.
We know that not many apps exist and the ones that do aren't fully formed yet.

My neighbour has an Apple watch and is a cyclist.
She said Strava doesn't really work for her.

I'll check out the next edition but I probably will buy V3.

Most Apple products they tend to get right on the second or third iteration. For example you will find stacks of people who are still happily using the iPhone 3GS or the iPad2 but virtually no one using the first generation of either.

I'd hold off a year or two unless you are an early adopter.

Depending on what you mean by 'nice', (I own a Seiko 5 automatic) I'd tend to agree and wouldn't buy an iWatch.  As much as I love the Apple products I own, and am somewhat mesmerised by the iWatch, I'd much prefer to spend £600 on a nice Omega, Hamilton or the like.

Thing is, that isn't really what it's for at all. It's intended mostly as a notification device at the moment. So,for instance, you get a text, and you can see without getting your phone out of your pocket who to from and whether it's important, and then ignore it, or ping back a quick response if needed "ok", "see you at 7", etc

It isn't trying to replace most functions of a smartphone as that just isn't possible, or even necessarily particularly helpful.

@beed84 - I mean an expensive watch. I've got a Rolex - I know someone who owns a Patek Philippe, a Breitling and a Omega.

I can't imagine next time I see him that he'll be wearing an iWatch.

Sorry - I wasn't clear,  I was referring to those functions and if it's not instant and clear then I might as well get my phone out.    The music thing just struck me as a handy bonus depending how much it can store.

I've got two omega's - a deville for going out and a planet ocean for day use,  but for the gym and work I want something cheaper - in the same way I have expensive and cheap guitars...

@richardhomer - Yes, I agree even more!  It would be a total downgrade and completely going against everything they value in such watches.

I pre-ordered and managed to get on launch day.

Went for the 42mm Sport, didn't want to get an expensive one, knowing there will likely be a new one in a year.

Battery life much better than expected, I take it off charge around 6:30am when I get up, by around 11pm, it's between 60-70% left.

I think getting the notifications on the watch is great, it means I'm messing around with my phone less, so much so that the battery is lasting longer.

The health stuff works well too. Definitely not an essential purchase, but it's very well executed, the haptic notifications work great, not tested with maps yet, but love the idea that you don't even need to look at the display when using it as a sat hav on foot (haptic feedback to let you know whether to turn left or right).

Nice work getting one,  from what I'm reading - if they were in the shops now I'd get one.  Like you I'd go for the sport model - I can't justify the extra which seems to be mainly a nicer strap.

I just read that one of the suppliers wasn't managing the quality levels so they dropped them and that is holding up supply at the moment.

Battery life sounds good and better than I expected!

The downside of getting it early is the risk of getting mugged with it, I've not seen anyone else with one so far.

Feel a lot safer wearing my TAG! (One of the cheaper ones, but still).
