Help/Advice - Christening Gift - Godfather to Godson

Afternoon All,

After a bit of advice/opinion on this. My best mate, that I've known for 25 years, has asked me to be the Godfather of his first born with the Christening in a few weeks. Was taken aback a bit, as we are still close mates (more like brothers), and always will be, but I now live 200 miles away and won't get to see as much of the kid as I'd like...But still hope to be a part of his life. 

Anyway, I want to get him a legit Christening gift but want to steer clear of the traditional silver money boxes etc. 

I was thinking about giving him one of my Swiss Watches and getting an engraved plaque that I can stick to the watch box - so he's got something he can have once he's a bit older. Everyone knows me as a watch guy, so it's an appropriate gift. 

Thoughts? And if you were the parent would you think this was an acceptable gift? 

Any advice or suggestions welcome!

Cheers mate. It's not something I'd do for anyone (but I'll see what I can do if you make me a Godparent ), but as we are such good mates and him and his whole family mean a lot to me - I wanted to do something a bit more special. 

It's not a rolex or anything, but it's a really nice (quartz) Moonphase Watch. I still have the original box so would make for a nice gift.

On a serious note, yeah, I think you're on the right lines with that. Really nice thing to have and hang onto for him when he';s old enough to appreciate it.

Cheers chaps! Was probably looking for re-assurance more than anything...But you can never be too sure in situations like this!

Yeah, the Godmother to our two got them a engraved silver money box each.  One was Noah's Ark and the other a Pirate Ship.  They love them and they are a great keepsake for them.

First choice should obviously be a Saints shirt, but other than that a watch is a great idea.

I know nothing about good watches (I buy a new Casio every 5 years when the battery runs out) but I do know that a good watch, properly cared for will outlive its owner.

So a good watch is not only a gift for him, it's something that he might be able to pass down in another 80-odd years.

I like that idea.

My only reservation is that it's a quartz watch - so his dad will need to keep getting the battery replaced until he's old enough to wear/appreciate it - but nevertheless, it's still a good quality watch which should be good for a number of years to come. 

I'll get it cleaned up at the Jewelers and get a plaque for the box this week.
