Different people like different things, so it's useful to have lots of ir's available to you. There are loads of good ones out there, but things like mic type and position make a huge difference to the sound.
I'm just surprised I guess. I looked at the price of redwirez IRS and they are $9 each or $125 for the bundle.
I play guitar and take photos of stuff. I also like beans on toast.
Built in IR's may be good, or as good, but if it's not quite what you want you can try others. I really like the torpedo wall of sound ir's, they've got a monstrous recto cab ir that sounds enormous, clean or driven.

Might have to get a few of the free ones to check out the utility/differences.
I only use free ones. Torpedo I had a free trial and it'd be worth every penny, but I've used good and bad free ones. I was very skeptical of the differences but when I heard it...
It's a significantly more important step than the overdrive pedal. I'd rate it as high as choosing the amp even, obviously only if recording direct though. FX loop send into an interface.

can you recommend any favourites as a starter for ten?
I've got some free redwirez, the free demo of torpedo wall of sound (very recommended!!), a couple from lePou (try his 456, it's brilliant) and, oddly enough, I have an IR from @drew_fx I have used a lot - I have a feeling it's an IR he made from his own engl cab.
