Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Always struck me as being down to earth, realistic and honest.
Him being Tory leader is one of my favourite speculative political 'what ifs?' along with other questions like 'What if John Smith had lived?'.

Then we would never have had Brown, we'd have probably been out of Iraq years earlier, and if the banking crash had still happened anyway we would at least have had someone competent to deal with it.
And David Cameron would still be an inconsequential junior minister probably.

If only he'd stood against Howard it might have been possible to convince them that two goes at the same losing strategy was enough, but apparently he decided not to for 'party unity'.
I bet he regrets that now...

I've always thought Clarke's recent reputation as the acceptable face of Toryism is a tad overly generous. In his ministerial career he was often a lot more aggressively right-wing than his genial bloke on the left of the party image suggests. His ropey links to the tobacco industry (as Health Secretary!) and willingness to take lucrative boardroom positions as well as fiddle his expenses don't really pass the smell test. As President he also opposed the admission of women to the Cambridge Union. A different era admittedly but still...........
But he still seems a lot more human than most politicians with lots of interests outside politics including an avid interest in jazz. His jazz programmes for the Beeb from the intelligent layman's point of view are pretty good. And you have to admire the principled way he stuck to his beliefs about Europe even when it became obvious that they were damaging his political career.
I can't imagine he feels comfortable about that clip though. He was always fond of a pint and looks pretty red about the face these days - I wonder if he was entirely sober.
Still he'll regret giving vent but the rest of us (Tory leadership contenders aside) will be glad he did.
