Which neck humbucker for 69 Thinline?

What's Hot
I'm building a 69 Thinline Partscaster and want to put a humbucker at the neck to pair with a Dimarzio Pre B1 in the bridge. I know nothing about humbuckers so am looking for some advice. I only use neck pickups for lead/soloing (which I try not do too much of) and like a nice thick sound, any suggestions from the likes of Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan? I'm not looking to pay too much so something I can pick up used easily would be preferred.

Oil City Pickups. Cheaper than the US ones, at least as well made, and in the UK.

Ask @TheGuitarWeasel for an exact model recommendation :).

The originals had Fender wide range HB's which have quite a distinctive tone. Dunno if Ash does any?

  • I  think Jamie at The Creamery does WR HBs....no idea as to the cost though

  • I'm aware of the WRHB, but they were in the 72 thinline not the 69. They are much larger than normal HB's so I doubt they'll fit the cavity on my guitar. Some manufacturers can make them normal HB sized but i'm not really looking for anything vintage correct, more like something that'll do the job, sounds decent and doesn't cost too much. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Happy to quote you for a standard HB sized WR :-)

  • Thanks for the offer but i'm not sure a WRHB is what i'm after, can it deliver a thick lead tone?

Yep. I had a Mojo WRHB in that very guitar body. Sounded pretty big with 250k pots. I'd even consider selling it too as it's sitting around without a home.

@BoopDeWoop - What would you be looking for? Do you have a pickguard too?

Best neck humbucker I ever ran in a tele (mine was in a Cimar 72 Custom copy - had a regular size neck humbucker, rather than a big slot for a WRHB) was a GFS Memphis Retrotron. It's Gretsch-looking (although now apparently marketed as their Rick-alike sounding), Alnico 2 and not wound too hot - paired really well with a tele bridge pickup.

  • The bridge pickup i'm using isn't a regular tele pickup, it has no base plate and has a heftier tone so it may not match as well. I'll check it out though. AFAIK GFS have hefty postage fees to the UK but are these made by Artec as their pickups can be picked up on ebay?
