Using the wrong words....

What's Hot

I thought I was mishearing things but recently on this very forum I have been reading those same things!  So nothing much wrong with my hearing.

The use of the word 'pacific' when the context  suggests it should be 'specific'

Any more.....

There was a guy being interviewed on the Olympic coverage yesterday who said "I'm literally speechless".

I only recently learned that "dissemble" meant something entirely different to "disassemble".

It is interesting to note, however, just how many people think that they are special because they can spell OK or know how to use an apostrophe. I suppose what's the point in knowing stuff if you can't be all superior about it, right?

Maybe they meant the affordable Yamaha guitar series and predictive text let them down?

'Your' and 'you're' seem to confuse people more than I'd like. "I was sat" annoys the bejesus out of me too....

While in the US over the last few trips at several airports I have heard the term 'deplane' announced by the staff at the gates as in 'Delta 406 has arrived at gate and we are currently waiting for passengers to deplane'

    Is that a real word?

    Apparently it is:

    VERB

    [NO OBJECT] North American
Disembark from an aircraft:we landed and deplaned

    Ref. Oxford English Dictionary.

When did we start allowing North American terms into the OED? Shameful!

My mum described the Brazilian shanty towns as "felafel's" the other day.
She also thought Spain was in South America, because they speak Spanish there.
    She never travelled.
    Or read, apparently.

There's a difference between regional/local forms of words or sentences which may be fine in one part of the country but are unknown and therefore viewed with suspicion in other parts of the country, and outright wrong forms of words or sentences.

Quite often these misuses are down to plain laziness. The use of "could of" instead of "could have" comes to mind. If you actually think what the words themselves mean then it's obvious.
