Ha! Just checked and I was fibbing; my Weller is set to 325.

I don't know why you lot listen to me at all.
Ha! - now I don't know if you're double bluffing or not. :D

    The 325 thing is true.

    But experiment.

Thinking about it, I guess the temp needs to be high enough that a joint can made quickly, without having to hold the iron in place for more than a second or two, but no hotter?

Ayup. I was raised to make solder joints in under 3 seconds if at all possible.

And you call yourself a scientist. Is global warming real or did you just read the thermometer like you read your solder station display? :)

I've never called myself a scientist.

You're really not very good at this wind-up lark.

When I was home-etching PCBs and occasionally building on veroboard, one of these was useful. It's a fun-sized Proxxon circular saw.

I also bought this little tabletop drill press solely to drill 3mm pilot holes in cast enclosures. Nowadays all the enclosures I use are custom-made though, so no more drilling.

Looks like good kit @timhulio, and as always it's useful to be made aware of these things, so cheers. Probably getting in a bit deep for where I am now, but in the future who knows. :)

I love those little Proxxons - tiny but so well built.

Thanks for this, my main concern was making sure it's hot enough to do a quick solder but not so hot as to damage anything.

Yep they're a real joy to use. I kind of wish I were into model boat building or similar just to have an excuse to use them.

Incidentally, I use lead-free solder and run my soldering iron at 450 degrees* and don't ruinate anything. I am, however, in-and-out real quick.

*that's the readout on my somewhat generic 60w Maplins solder station, which may or may not be accurate!
