Ant ideas what is causing this. I plug my strat into the amp and there is a loud unbearable static noise. Unscrew the jack socket with the lead still in it just resting loosely on the outside of the guitar body, switch on and it stops. Thanks in anticipation.

Sounds like either the tip of the plug is touching the cavity shielding which is also not grounded properly, or the jack is wired backwards.

With the jack out of the guitar, do you get a buzz/hum when you touch the strings?

Sorted. Thanks ICBM looks like the jack socket nut had come slightly loose allowing one of the soldered terminals to touch.
