NGD - Les Paul Love-In

What's Hot
Hey all - got a couple of new Les Pauls recently, so have taken a few glamour shots of them reclining casually on the sofa. Ones a 2014 R8, the other a 2009 LP Custom. Really pleased with them both, the R8 in particualr in is amazing. Pics  -

    Very nice & congrats!  biggratz

Forgetting aesthetic differences, how would you describe the tonal differences and playability between the two?

Also, the Custom has Grover machines - how do you find the R8 machine-heads in comparison?
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

  • Its difficult to do a like for like comparison because they are both in different tunings - Custom is Drop-c, R8 is E - the R8 has a bit more sparkle and snap I guess, but this could just be the strings. Both are very resonant and feel like a LP should, if that makles any sense. Playability wise they are both lovely - the pickups in the R8 are nicer sounding clean but it cant quite do the ultra heavy metal/hardcore  I play with the Custom. They both have a pretty low action (1.5mm at the 12th) and there is nary a buzzing fret to be found anywhere. The tunings pegs - I prefer the R8 machine heads, they seems quicker and smoother.

But do they hold tuning as well?  The Grovers on my LP Custom are tighter than the tulip head tuners on my SG Standard (that I'd prefer to be a little tighter), but the Grovers are much better from a tuning accuracy & hold perspective.

Are the tuners on an R8 the same as the SG Standard tuners, or are they mechanically different?

They both hold tuning perfectly, not had any problems so far, and I am brutal with my thrashing/bending. I dont know if theyre mechanically different to SG ones

  • A splendid pair!! Loving the Custom but then I would as my Epiphone is a Custom and I love that. Having said that the R8 is stunning too.  I do love a LP!!
