Anti-virus for Win 10?

What's Hot

My PC came with 3 months of Bullguard. That seems ok.

But now that the trial period is up - do I pay for it, or use Windows Defender, or something else?

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

I use Avast, it's free and unobtrusive.

Another vote for Avast. It found things AVG didn't.

Also, things like Spybot and Malabytes Malware are worth having.

In the early days of Windows 10 I put Avast on my wife's laptop and it caused problems with the start menu intermittently disappearing.  I'm sure that's solved now but I just went back to Windows Defender and have been using that on it.  It seems fine.

My old desktop has AVG on it, but it annoys me because it keeps popping up things trying to get me to buy the full version, and getting me to change my default search to their AVG secure search.  Every couple of weeks I have to change the search back because other family members click the wrong option on the stupid popups.

Good call.  I also use Spybot Search and Destry from time to time, just in case...

My experience of AVG was that you no longer owned your PC, and that one way of keeping viruses off it was to ensure that you couldn't use the bloody thing because everything slowed to a crawl.

I wouldn't bother paying as the free ones are good enough, just make sure you fully uninstall it before trying to install a different one. Avast and Avira are popular, I installed BitDefender once on a PC that had real issues with Avast. AVG used to be common but seems a bit more bloated now. Kaspersky is reckoned to be one of the best but I have no personal experience with it.

Personally I just use Windows Defender, don't let anyone else use my laptop and scan with MalwareBytes once in a while. I am careful about what internet sites I visit though. IF I were to stream TV/films from less reputable sites, I would use Private Browsing and a browser with an ad-blocker (like Chrome or Opera). I also infrequently delete internet history/cache/cookies etc. Don't do this if you can't remember your Amazon password though...!

Kaspersky is very good with on line password protection, anti-keystroke logging etc.

It is expensive at full RRP though I've always managed to get it on offer somewhere, around £20 per year for the full internet suite.
