  • I list items, and always take offers via message. Never let auction run its course.

I use BIN and work out what I need to get what I want after fees I don't mind the fees as it gets you a lot of eyeballs.

    I use this.

    http://www.freeebaycalculator.co.uk/

I can't be bothered with auctions as if I'm unlucky then I loose £'s.

I usually at best offer, so I can know a fiver off. I did have someone offer me £20 for a £140 pedal... chancers.

And then I just leave it and wait - someone will buy it if it's priced OK who can be bothered waiting for an auction to end.

That said If I have something I want shot of, and is worth very little I just chuck it on 99p no reserve.

Auctions deter people, in my experience.

Use BIN but state that you'll consider a discount for cash on collection and invite offers. List your item for 20% more than you'll actually take.

  • Buy it now for me every time

As a buyer I also don't want to wait for up to 10 days for an auction to end for it to be pulled by day 8-9 when I could have purchased elsewhere in the meantime

BIN every time for consumables and small value you things that I need. However I don't mind an auction for collectables and things I want (rather than need). I wont sell on ebay unless it's cash on collection because I do not trust paypal and their willingness to side with buyers in nearly all disputes. I prefer to sell on Gumtree these days.

Thing is, I reckon for really desirable things, auction is the way forward.

Is there that much difference in fees?

How can you get the fees down? They're crippling!

I wasn't aware there was a difference between the two listings. I always factor in 10% fees inc postage costs.

Auction on minimum reserve you can afford for selling, only because it is/was cheaper but if it's something of value then cash on collection and just use the thing as an advertising platform.  If it's something completely worthless 99p start.

    Agree BIN on purchased consumables

In the past I always did 99p start auctions for everything - from patch cables to amps - because things tended to sell for a fair going rate (or the good/bad final prices evened out over time). The last few years the second hand market seems a lot more patchy and I can't always be sure there will be enough buyers who actually want the valuable thing I'm selling in any given week, so I tend to do BIN with best offer these days.

BIN...always for selling and 95% of the time for buying
0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • Neither.

I simply consider ebay  a cheap advertising site to a worldwide audience, so the format employed is irrelevant.

Do people still actually use it to sell things? How very last year.....

I don't normally sell anything valuable on there so normally auction with 99p start to reduce fees.

I'm the reverse when I'm buying.  Almost all BIN items are overpriced.  When I do a search I often restrict it to auction only.

If there is a big market for it then I'll probably do an auction starting at 0.99.   Never use a reserve it just puts people off and prices are very rarely less than I wanted, often way more.
If its a bit more specialised then BIN but allow offers and make it obvious that I'll take a deal direct.
I'd also wait until I get one of discounts on fees they sometime send out.

Best Offer is a complete waste of time in my view. Never sold a thing with it. Rarely do I auction things out. BIN all the way.

Try using Reverb. I've had sales on there. People tend to be more aware about item prices over there ie. they won't pay over the odds as you get on eBay.

Call me naive but I always use auction for guitars in the hope that 2 people might really want it and pay over the odds  :/

For buying, best offer or auction. For selling BIN just beats auctions (higher sale price on 3 identical items recently)

What I like best at the moment for buying is when there's BIN and best offer but the "winner" pulls out and then the seller offers it to you at a 22% discount if you pick it up and have cash with you when you do so.

It's been a while - too long - since I sold anything, but I like BIN or Best Offer.

I only use auctions for things where I have no real idea about a selling price e.g. guitar necks - start it at 99p, there's loads of interest and you always end up with a good (or good-ish) result.  I wouldn't take that approach with a guitar because you never get anywhere near what you think it's worth.

As I buyer I also much prefer BIN or best offer.  It's tedious waiting for the end of an auction, they often end at stupid times and then there are those fuckers who decide to pull their auction a few hours before it was due to end just because there's not as much interest as they hoped.
