...well, it's not, of course it's not BUT after last nights gig with this rig, I've woken up with a real odd feeling that I don't want to buy any more amps today. I'll be fine tomorrow...
But until then... this sounded incredible last night. We were headlining an outdoor festival, we soundchecked in the afternoon and the engineer initially mic'd both up with 2 x 57's. I cranked them and half way through, he came up and took the mics away and said "I don't think we'll be needing these!"
The most inspiring & bone crushingly loud tone i've had in a long while. J40 is running clean-ish pushed with a Cruiser and the J20 is running nice and dirty.....that clean but dirty tone - Pure Keef!

Mate, I'd love a photo of your J20 settings if possible at some point...
Those two do LOOK the absolute cobs too !!!

I know they are simple, but I rehearsed the other week, changed things round (Im normally on the 'normal' input) and it just felt magical. The week after ??? Not so !!!
The two together are stunning as you can imagine, the J40 adds some rich bottom end that I find lacking on the J20.
Im driving the input of the J40 with a cruiser to get that edge of breakup thing happening but I might dig out my Airbreak and give that a try too.

Tonally, I much prefer the J40 to the J20, it has a rich bottom end, no mid spike like the J20 and the top end really sparkles, with the negative feedback wide open, it has a real 3D Matchless-like quality.
The J20 is much more mid focused and 'ragged' like a tweed deluxe should be. It does have the major advantages of being more portable, is voiced so it cuts through any mix and is infinitely more tameable that the J40.
Together they are outstanding.

from Tweed to more Blackface and it tightens everything up and gives a much quicker, punchier attack. Turning the negative feedback off also tightens up the attack so it'll get very close to Blackface - perhaps not as close as a Carr or Toneking but very close.
its a very versatile amp but still firmly I the tweed bloodline. If you are after purely Blackface Fender, find a Blackface Fender amp.
