I hope you didn't put the old smoke alarms in the bin - the reason they have a life span is because the detector uses a small radioactive source, which decays over time. They need to be properly recycled - or at least disposed of somewhere that takes hazardous waste.
If there is a life span for the device, it's probably not caused by the radioactive source. Google suggests that the isotope normally used is Americium 241 which has a half life of 432 years.  There won't be a significant drop over 10 years.

There is very little of it in a smoke detector - typically 3 micrograms.  It's also an Alpha emitter so it's not going to be all that dangerous unless you ingest it as alpha particles are stopped by skin.  Even if you ingest it, it's used in the form of an insoluble oxide in smoke detectors and will just pass through.  In the normal way of things Alpha emitters aren't that dangerous unless you put a much more active isotope like polonium 210 into someone's tea!  As long as you don't upset Putin too much you should be ok.

There is a much higher level of radiation from an old style luminous watch dial.  There are probably millions of them in landfill.
