Wondering what all you very helpfull people think of gibsons les paul custom lites? I'm talking about the 80's models not the recent one's. Got some gas for a les paul again and I've seen one of these but a bit suss about the thinner body. The electrics are the standard gibson type rather than the coil tap thing. Thanks in advance llew.

I played a Metallic Pink one once... I kid you not... and I thought it sounded great, but that was a long time ago (mid 90s).

EDIT: Just checked my memory and found this via Google... I know Mr H has been accused of making everything sound the same but...

I had one briefly.  It was undoubtedly a very nice guitar but the light weight and thinner body felt wrong.     Totally my issue not the guitar but although it looked like a les Paul from the front it didn't feel like a les Paul.    I couldknotbocboy have adjusted but decided to sell it while it was still mint.
I'd recommend trying one to see if you like them.

I've got one of the most recent ones that had proper electronics in it - no coil taps.

I still ripped them out and it now has my favourite Seymours in it.

I really like the guitar. Feels right, and is comfortable for my back

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

I really like the idea of them being  light. Food for thought thanks all.

I had one of the newer ones (2013 model) but it's pretty much the same as the '80s models, apart from the originals having ebony boards and the new ones having rosewood (unfortunately).

@John_P is right that it feels completely different, but to me that's a good thing.  There's no real difference in construction, just the thinner body, but it hugely improves top fret access and makes the guitar feel much more manageable.

The light weight is a good thing too, but that can be achieved in different ways - I've got a chambered LP which is super-light but still feels like a normal one with the thick body and bulky neck joint.

The Custom Lite is a great idea.  I wish they made more thin-body LPs.

I've got a line on one of the 80s ones (also met. 'sunrise' pink) in direct trade for my PRS Paul's Guitarl; what does the collective wisdom think of that deal?

I think it's Sunset, not Sunrise, but go for it.

I have an 8.0lb non-chambered Fujigen that sounds better, but it has a rosewood board.

Seventy Seven might do a chambered 'Stork' in a Custom finish.

Going by that video, I'd be keeping the PRS.

Did they have some of he mahogany chambered out and replaced with "chromite" (AKA balsa wood)? I had a Gibson LP Studio light and it was that construction.
I sold it to Surrey Cricketer Mark Butcher who was a customer back in 1988

Needless to say my fascination with slimmer and more manageable LP types persisted and making them sound fab too !

The colour is so god damn cool. I kinda like weird Gibsons. Always thought the blues and night hawks looked cool. Do think you have to accept that they’re not quintessential. Which sadly is kinda the point of a Gibson.

My carved top single cuts are the thickness of a junior now and they sound damn good, I had mine up against  a real 54 and they were spot on sound wise so lightweight and comfortable wins.

Financially that feels pretty reasonable, and the pink ones are ridiculously cool (in the right context..!). But I thought you loved the Paul's Guitar...?

I think the chromite (or was it maybe chromyte) filled ones were full thickness.

    Could be Philly.
I wasn't sure of the spelling but remembered it came from a adaptation of the botanical name
    for balsa : Ochroma pyramidale

Balsa is more expensive than mahogany per cubic metre, so it certainly wasn't a cost cutting exercise.

I really do, but I'm fickle   I haven't touched the PG much at all (or any other guitar!) since buying the '64 Trini, so that's the only driver really.

Anyway, it's a moot point - I slept on it too long and the LPC sold!  I'll just make my own version soon instead... in aged silver-burst :)
