So, here's a question I'm playing with at the min. Assuming you're turning up to gigs to use whatever amp is already there (knowing only that it will be loud enough), what's the least number of pedals you'd be happy with?
I'm thinking it's compressor, distortion/od and boost (plus a tuner).
Now, I'd argue with the right pedals, that would cover you in most styles - a pro session player could make that work for any situation (I'd guess).
I know some styles require a certain pedal (say slap back delay for certain country styles for example), but what pedals would you choose?
I'm trying out a few for this very purpose at the min (Carl Martin hot drive and boost and Dyna Comp, as well as trying a Wampler Pinnacle (incoming) and Plextortion (arrived today). I've heard good things about the Diamond compressor too.
My current guess would be Diamond compressor, Wampler Pinnacle deluxe and a clean boost of some sort. I'd definitely say "amp in a box" is the way to go...
What do you guys think?

That would easily get me through a gig. Maybe a reverb, but I don't use one at the minute...
I really am tempted by a ht metal pedal. Might start a thread.
None at all.
I might even throw in a mesa V-twin and take out the tube screamer. (But revalved for a brighter tone)
If push comes to shove I can do without FX. I have to be in tune though
Tuner+ ampinbox and then whatever effects you normally use. A clean boost can be a good idea with unfamiliar amps as they may not project as you expect and you may be ableto get to the knob on your boost easier than the amp controls.
Of course if it is just for a couple of numbers on a jam night everyone will think you are a prat.
I agree, I'd get a multi FX for this scenario, aiming to use it as the primary tone generator.
I like my real pedals but I've picked them and dialed them in to work with my real amp. If I have to compromise I might as well compromise in the way that gives me most control.
