What to do on a boring holiday?

What's Hot
In the summer I'm going with the family to Bulgaria for a two week holiday.  Now my wife is Bulgarian and she wants to travel around the country a bit and visit places that she grew up in (mainly in the mountains) and see old friends. A bit of a homesick pilgrimage really for her. Now I can't and don't want to begrudge her the opportunity to do all this but after a couple of days I get REALLY bored and pissed off at hanging around (usually looking after the 2 kids)  while she spends ages in cafes catching up with her old friends (speaking in Bulgarian REALLY fast so I can't keep up with what they are saying).

We're planning the trip and the itinery at the moment and Mrs Fred is getting stressed at me asking what I want to do. She gets pissed at me for looking bored and grumpy.  However when I look online, there is BUGGER ALL to do that I'd be remotely interested in.  The scenery in amazing but as I have plantar faciitus, I can't walk all that far before getting to quite a bit of pain,  so walking in the countryside on hikes is a bit of a no-no.

I'll take some drawing stuff, I might take my harmonica and see if I can improve a bit on that, Try taking some photos.

So any suggetions of how to keep myself occupied (without much equipment) up a mountain, in the middle of nowhere (assume no mobile connection), in the searing heat, with two young daughters?

Photography sounds like a good plan. I don't know much about the place but a google image search on 'Bulgaria mountains' looks fantastic.

Stay at home while the wife goes to Bulgaria and visits friends? Beyond that no idea really, especially if walking very far isn't an option. To be honest, it doesn't sound much a holiday to you at all :/

  • Yeah, it's a beautiful place, no doubt.  But I kind of like to actually DO something.

  • Is there a reason you can't take a guitar?

If you've got a laptop/iPad and interface you could write and record music

I spent five days in Marlborough Sounds in NZ in January with two teens and their mum and I honestly had a great time. No internet, no phone signal, no access to anywhere. Board games, dinghy, jigsaws and just hanging out with a G&T (though we ran out of tonic on day 2 so had G&tea which was rank).

Either dont go and leave her to it, or be the man and take the reins. Arrange everything thats going to happen, and it wont involve sitting around in cafes. or maybe just tell her how you feel about it and ask her to stop ignoring you for such long periods and ask her to include you in things more?

As for interesting things to do whilst your wife ignores you, then chatting up other women is a valid option in my opinion. Collect phone numbers.

If it's that boring I'd stay home with the kids and just let your wife get on with it. Spend the money the fares would have cost on doing stuff you and your daughters actually like. Win win.

Find a cheapo eastern block junk shop guitar. Play it for two weeks, and then, bin it or sell it back to a second hand shop, gift it to one of the relatives' kids, or realise it is your new soul mate and sneak it into your luggage.

Can't sing, can't dance, can handle a guitar a little.

Could you hire a guitar when you get to Bulgaria. And a battery powered amp so you can play anywhere...

Or a mountain bike? When I had plantar fasciitis it was weight/pressure on my heel that caused all my pain, so cycling was fine. A chance to get some exercise in stunning scenery plus kids tend to like bikes.

On day three get deported back to the UK ... :-)

Can't you take your girls out sightseeing for a day or two? There's loads of historic sites to visit and travel by train is cheap.
