The kids are the issue.  I could quite happily sit by a hotel pool and read.

    How old are your daughters?

When we've done 'boring' holidays then tried to make sure there are activities like bike hire or kayaking some of the time. Either I've done them with the kids or stuff they can do whilst I read a book. If you are up in the mountains there's probably those kind of things around. Then the sightseeing and cafe stuff is recovery time.
Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

(speaking in Bulgarian REALLY fast so I can't keep up with what they are saying).

Improve your Bulgarian so you can keep up?

Watch her uncle kicking a ball around?

Podcasts on your phone/iPad, get the Johnny Vaughan ones from Radio X on iTunes, there's 76 to go at and I find him quite funny, made me LOL a few times, get some headphones.

get some good books on your phone/iPad

Vodka, with coke and ice, sit in the shade.

Magnifying glass and some marbles for the kids.

    Sorted

no, seriously, how old are your kids? The last 'sun' holiday we went on was Egypt in 2014 and the kids were 13 and 11 (they were got bored after about 4 days. Didn't have a holiday in 2015 and did New York in summer 2016 which the kids loved but it was an up and out and about every day type of holiday. I don't think they would stand for another sit by the pool holiday.

Hire an offroad Segway. Solves both mobility and entertainment (for you and others) in one swoop.

    Yes, I'm just brilliant.

  • My daughters will be 11 and 5 respectively. I really want to try to make this a success but it is going to be challenging.  Some of the places we're likely to go to are very basic and rural with little or no provision for tourists.

The he little one is very active and energetic, the big one, er, not so much.

Theres been some pretty good suggestions so far though.

  • On the musical instrument front... A mandolin is hand luggage. I've taken mine a few places.

Getting your hands on a bike sounds decent.
Do her friends have kids/partners you could use as guides?

Don't dismiss taking a guitar. Every year I take one on holiday - bolt on neck, take it apart and pack guitar neck in wife's case and Guitar body in mine. Wrapped well in clothing. Doesn't take up much room. I only take a cheapie in case it breaks but 7 years and counting, it's been absolutely fine.

A cheap ukulele, or three. Small enough to go in the luggage. Teach the littl'uns a few chords and some simple songs and Robert's your mother's brother.  You can thank me later.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

It won't be that boring, you'll fall in with locals, learn the language, get ratt arsed, leave your wife and children for a younger model.  It'll be fun.

I often wonder in the strangers are real in Sambostar's effusions about drunken chats with them and, assuming they are, whether they would be quite so positive about the experience as he is.
