Hello... Back again and today I did the back plate, some more neck shaping and then just general boring sanding (does anyone actually enjoy doing that? )
First I start with the template for the control cavity (the outer rim one) and draw the outline from the offcut of the body blank (always keep spare wood for these sorts of things, I will probably do a korina trussrod cover too)
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_1968_zpslvdlucsb.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_1970_zpsbuazgwcg.jpg
I cut it with this electric saw.. When I first got it I thought it would be a real time saver BUT it vibrates so hard its really only for cutting through soft wood or tree branches,. Cutting through several inches of hardwood, not so much.. But I still use it for this job.
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_1973_zpsi9yvu2sy.jpg
So I cut it roughly to size with my jigsaw..
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_1975_zpsmkgpjp9g.jpg
After some sanding its fitting ok on the top
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_1976_zpscfudjqr4.jpg
But here, see on the bottom right, and the corner its not quite to size

http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_1978_zps63xybsrt.jpg
One of the ways I do this is to lay my angle grinder down and turn it on (while holding or clamping it down) and just use it like a belt sander.. Very light passes and then keep trying and once im really near I move to a file so I have full control.
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_1980_zpsy7gblniq.jpg
I now have it fitting the pocket, just need to sand it down to the correct thickness which I do with it in place on the body.

Then for the screw holes
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2001_zpsbmrwaicj.jpg
Just need to counter sink them a bit

So there we are.. looking good (if I do say so myself ) If I get the time I may even start the oiling process tomorrow.. You want to be around for that.. Probably one of the most satisfying parts of a build..

Just wanted to say for anyone watching... I wont be finishing this until next week now... I wanted to try and get it ready for the guitar show at the weekend but its just not going to happen (I am thinking about taking it along to show people anyway?) and the last thing you want to do at this point is start rushing things (cos that's when it goes wrong).... It is frustrating cos I want to see it so bad, but you gotta do these things properly.
So im sure I will be a bit quiet until a couple of days after the show.. THEN I will get some oil on this baby

Horrrahhh.. Finally got back to work today....
Basically I feel I should explain a little cos this is my first build thread on here.. The reason this has taken so long is because my dad is currently going through radio therapy treatment.. Hes doing well an all but hes in the last week now and has been getting really tired and sleeping in the day.. So I didn't want to wake him or disturb his rest... But its almost done now...
If I was doing this for a customer I would have fiished ages ago but as it is im not really in any rush to finish apart from I cant wait to see what this guitar is going to look like once I get some oil on it.
Anyway...
Where were we.. Well I did find a small issue with my design I hadn't quite thought about (cos ive not done a carved to before) and that's where the control holes are, two of them are right on the hump and therefor the nuts wont sit properly.
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2069_zpsypk6yvon.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2072_zps29sns2lr.jpg
I then drew around the area that I need to get more flat
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2073_zps01zpgku0.jpg
After a short bit of caressing it now looks like this and fits
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2074_zpssuwyozad.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2075_zpspvfdclsp.jpg
I had to change the shape a bit around that area for it to fit
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2076_zpsglqky5gy.jpg
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2077_zpscy5viwwp.jpg
Still need to finish it off a little more by hand but im pretty happy with that, once the controls are on you will see less of that area anyway
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2080_zps6uzzbxjr.jpg
So.. The next thing was to clean up all the small scratches.. Which I do with some 400 grit paper on my orbital sander

http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2087_zpsh2bpqxro.jpg
Then on to finishing the neck... Its now at the right size that I want (by feel) and so I measure it to make sure that the taper is consistent down the neck (quite a slim neck on this one which I like)

Sorted
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r588/Rabs2010/2017 work/DSC_2103_zpseio8pis1.jpg
So there we are.. I still need to do a wee bit of sanding around the area I just changed... But the rest is all good and ready to go

Been going on way longer than I would usually take.. But life just gets in the way sometimes... and I will always take the time to make sure everything is right than rush it just to get it finished and screw something up. That would just be silly at this stage.

Work of art that is, Rabs.
Wow, thanks for the compliment
And yes, my way is not a traditional way... Some people don't like it but most people don't even mention it.... I think some kind of volute is essential. That area where the headstock and neck meet is really thin.. and as we know guitars without them like Gibsons are prone to break if dropped... So from my point of view its a functional thing to do, I can make it stronger there so I do, which hopefully makes for a more durable and stable guitar

I'll be staining and Tru oiling a strat body this week, any tips on applying the oil?
Well theres several vids on the subject.. So watch some of those, they can explain it better than I can.... And the more you watch the more different tips you will pick up.. I think a lot of luthier type work is finding out what approaches work best for you...
I have a staining vid right here
This is a good place to start on tru oil vids
There is some safety advice.... If you use an old rag or t-shirt or whatever, DO NOT just throw them in the bin at the end of the day. Its been known that while tru oil is drying it can cause a chemical reaction which causes heat and in some extreme cases fire... What you do is leave the rags out flat to dry... Once they are dry you can throw them away.
Also use a lint free.. When you are rubbing the oil in it starts to get sticky, and if you have lint on the cloth it will just get all over the finish. At the moment I use kitchen towel and then flush it down the loo when im finished
But again you need to find out what works for you. Check the different methods out there and maybe try it on a scrap bit of wood first..
Good luck with it and post pics when you are done
